Dia 259 / Day 259 - March 18/2013

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The day did not start very well.  We arrived at the bus station to get the bus from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer and the bus attendant told us that we had to pay 20 rupees each to be able to deposit our bags in the trunk of the bus.  The charges seemed excessive to us, we had to pay once but it was only 10 rupees, so we were suspicious.  I argued with the attendant and got a discount to 10 rupees each.  When I told the guy that had checked our tickets that the attendant was charging us 20 rupees for each bag he gave him shit (all in Hindi) but you can see the attendant was in trouble because of his face.  They reimburse the money and apologize.  Unfortunately this is the type of situations that make a visit to India a little bit unpleasant… there is always someone trying to get advantage of the tourist, however this time I was the winner!

Be prepared for another scam prepared by the Indian master scam artists.  After 7 hours by bus before we arrive in Jaisalmer, the bus attendant came to talk to all the tourists (including us) saying that the bus company had a few jeeps to transport us to our hotels for only 10 rupees each and it was part of the services offered by them.  We all fell in that trap.  We got on the jeep and told the driver that we wanted to go to the guest house we had selected inside the fort.  Half way to the fort and finding lots of road closures, the perfect excuse to divert us, we were taken to their guest house.  We were told that the Lonely Planet guide says that the fort is going to fall down because of water damage and it could happen any minute… liers!  Since we did not have a reservation at the place we selected, we decided to look at the guest house… it was the dirtiest place I have seen… it even surpassed the Mumbai place I wrote about a few days ago, remember?  I gave them a piece of my mind and left without even paying for the jeep ride.  I was so pissed that I did not want any other Indian talking to me… and when they did I just ignored them, I did not want to do anything with them.  On our way to the fort we were approach by a few guest house owners but the places were not that good so we went to Ganesh Guest House, a nice place.

In the afternoon we visited the Jaisalmer Fort Palace Museum and Heritage Centre.

  2. It seems that the majority of the palaces you have visited in India have a huge muslim/middle eastern influence from the archtecture point of view. Am I right?
