Dia 272 / Day 272 - March 31/2013

Today we went for a walk along the Ganges river to try to discover and understand the spirituality that this city brings in the middle of the caos and dirt.  The truth is that we will never understand it… it is a very difficult place to describe.  The first place we saw was Manikarnika ghat, the cremation place; it is very public, actually it has become a tourist attraction where lots of drunk guys came to tourists to bother them and try to convince them to take a tour and get money.  One of them came to us but in a very direct and polite way we asked him lo leave us alone… my patience is running out!

While at the cremation place we met David, an Australian guy we crossed a few words at the train station yesterday.  Today we went for a walk with him along the river.  It is very entertaining, you can see a lot of people taking a bath, people washing cloths, taking buffalos on the river, washing buffalos, etc.  Even though this river is the most sacred river for Hindus, it is very contaminated, as a matter of fact it is one of the most contaminated in the world.

During the walk I am almost victim of a new scam… here is Varanasi they have a new one, what a surprise!  There are guys that extend their hand asking for a hand shake, as a courtesy (to be polite) you give them your hand and immediately they start doing massage on the hand and even on the neck… this is another way to take money from the tourists.  In the afternoon it was the worst, it was an old man and insisted in a hand shake… he said that he was an innocent old man and he only wanted to say hello… he said a lot of bullshit and followed me.  He convinced me and I extended my hand and immediately he went for my neck to massage it… you cannot imagine my reaction, I cannot write what I said to him… they will cancel the blog!

After lunch we continue walking and got to a floating bridge where we crossed to arrive at Ramnagar Fort.  We went inside the fort but after seeing the palaces and forts in Rajasthan, this is not worth to get in.  It is in very bad shape and the exhibits are poor to say the least.

We took a boat from the fort to Dasashwamedth ghat where we stayed for the blessing of the river ceremony.

After the ceremony we went for dinner with David at a local restaurant.  The currys we had for dinner were delicious.

Dia 271 / Day 271 - March 30/2013

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a very good night on the train we arrived in Varanasi.  We made reservations for the next two cities to avoid nights like the previous ones.

In Varanasi we had made a reservation at a guesthouse and they told us that they will have somebody in the station to pick us up.  When we arrived we met the guy that was going to take us to the hotel, however while we bought the tickets for the next stops the guy disappeared.  When we left the ticket office another man told us that he also works for the same guesthouse and even pulled out of his wallet a business card, so we went with him.  We arrived at the guesthouse, settle in our room and when I was filling out the registration forms the first guy called furious asking why we had not waited for him… the guy and the owner argued for a little bit and then he put him on the phone so I can explain to him, however there was nothing to explain, he disappeared and another guy told us that he works for the same guesthouse so we came with him.  The other guy stole his customer and the guesthouse’s commission; this is unbelievable… if they do these type of things among themselves how can we expect they treat the tourist.  We cannot really trust anybody!

After lunch we went on a guided tour around the city where we visited some of the temples and interest sites.  We also went to some places with a nice view of Ganges river.  The area around the river was built with very narrow streets where motorcycles, cows and people share them; however it is very caotic and dirty.

Varanasi is the Holiest city for Hindus and has numerous temples.  Every Hindu must come to Varanasi at least once in his/her life and take a bath in the Ganges river.

In the evening we took a boat tour along the Ganges river unti Dasashwamedh ghat, where very evening the Holy man perform religious rituals to bless the river.  There are several hundreds of people coming to this place by boat to attend the ceremony.  Pleople buy candles and flower in small baskets and let them float on the river as offers.

The boat tour passes by Manikarnika ghat, the burning ghat where most bodies are cremated in Varanasi.  There are cremations 24 hours per day in this place and it is estimated that around 150 to 200 people are cremated here everyday.

Dia 270 / Day 270 - March 29/2013

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a long night on the train we arrived in Khajuraho, definitely Marcela and I cannot sleep together in a narrower bed than a singe bed.  We took turns but it did not work, there was a possibility to sleep on the floor with the mice but we discarded that option rather quickly.  On top of everything there was a very laud family close by, the women talked all night… marce slept when it was her turn, but I could not sleep much.  I told the ladies to shut up a few times but they did not care… it is India and people do what they want and do not respect anything or anybody.  Respect is a non existen word in the dictionary, that’s for sure!

At the train station we asked for a refund because we only used one bed instead of two.  The ticket office man told us that we were lucky… there are 4 options under the waiting list: one is to get the number of beds your paid for; second is to get a RAC ticket, which means that 2 people sleep in one bed; the third one is to find a place on the floor wherever is convenient; the last one is to get a refund but before the train leaves.  In all the cases it is necessary to pay a complete fare like anybody else that got a comfortable bed… very abusive system in my opinion.

We arrived in Khajuraho and left the backpacks at the train station… at this station you do not need a finger print to leave the backpacks, what a lack of process standardization in this country… hahahaha!  We took a Tuk Tuk and went to the western group of temples in Khajurajo, a UNESCO heritage site since 1986.  We spent the morning and part of the afternoon looking at the temples.  This is a very nice and clean place, it is well taken care of, the gardens are beautiful and very clean, there is no garbae on the floor… it is a very special place.  The templos are carved with hundreds of gods figures and erotic figures which is known as the Kamasutra.

In the afternoon we took at nap on the garden.  When we woke up we finished looking at the temples and went for lunch at a place that has an amazing view of the temples.  We saw the sunset from there and had dinner before going to the station to take our train to Varanasi.  We have a confirmed bed assigned for tonight’s train ride.
