Mayo 1 - 5 / May 1 - 5

Vamos para Bali. Queremos ver cual es el cuento de Canguu, Kuta y sus alrededores que todo el mundo habla de esos lugares.

Tomamos un bote rapido porque el la unica manera de pasar de Nusa Lembongan a Sanur en Bali. Ahora necesitamos transporte desde Sanur al hotel donde nos vamos a quedar… bueno, otra batalla. Cuando nos bajamos del bote aparecieron los famosos “genios locales” y nos ofrecieron llevarnos al hotel pero a un precio ridiculo. Habiamos mirado en UBEr y GRAB y los dos operan en Sanur, desafortunadamente la mafia local y los hoteles han restringido las areas de operacion de estas dos compañias y no pueden recoger pasajeros en el area donde nosotros estamos. Cuando pedimos el primer taxi usando GRAB, el señor nos escribio pidiendo mas plata de que que decia la aplicacion, discutimos un poco por texto y termine cancelando el servicio. El segundo, tambien usando GRAB, nos pidio que caminaramos unos 10 minutos hasta que llegaramos a la zona permitida para recoger pasajeros; nosotros aceptamos, pero mientras tanto el acepto otra carrera y pasaron mas de 20 minutos y no aparecio, asi que tambien lo cancelamos. El tercero lo pedimos usando UBER, aparecio casi inmediatamente y pagamos lo que decia la aplicacion, de hecho mucho menos que GRAB. Vale la pena comparar el precio de las dos aplicaciones ya que tienen maneras diferentes de calcular el precio de la carrera y a veces la diferencia es muy significativa.

Fueron unos 45 minutos por las calles y diferentes areas de Bali hasta que llegamos al hotel D’Tegale Homestay, en la parte alta de Canguu. Habiamos reservado un hotel en la zona rural al lado de los cultivos de arroz. Alli nos recibieron Made and Wayan, una pareja de gente local que tiene un pequeño hotel, muy amables y hablan muy buen inlges. Las casas son hechas de madera, con estilo Balines, la cama muy buena, todo muy limpio. Lo mejor es que la ducha no tiene techo asi que se puede disfrutar de la naturaleza mientras se baña… un lugar excelente. Nos relajamos un rato y almorzamos. En la tarde fuimos a caminar por los cultivos de arroz, conversamos con la gente que trabaja en los cultivos, nos regalaron pepinos y conocimos gente muy buena… y lo mejor de todo es que todos son familiares de Made.

El 2 de Abril nos movimos para un hotel mas cerca de la playa, aunque la seleccion de hotel no fue la mejor esta vez… que cagadero al que llegamos, se veia bien en las fotos pero la realidad fue otra.

En la tarde fuimos a caminar por la playa y nos encontramos para comer con Aurore, una amiga francesa que conocimos en Nepal hace varios años.

El 3 de Abril nos fuimos para Kuta, esta vez nos aseguramos de escoger un mejor hotel. Queremos disfrutar de un buen hotel con piscina y relajarnos un poco antes de nuestra proxima aventura.

Los siguientes dias no la pasamos diciendo “no thank you” a todos los vendedores fastidiosos que tratan de venderle a uno de todo en las calles… llego a un punto que los que ya nos conocian nos ofrecian el servicio y ellos mismos se contestaban “no thank you”, muy gracioso.

La comida en Kuta es muy deliciosa, fuimos varias veces a Warung Hati, donde comimos un plato de carne llamado Beef Rendang.

We are heading back to Bali. We want to see what the fuss is about Canguu, Kuta and surrounding area that everybody talks about.

We took the fast boat, as there is not ferry from Bali to Nusa Lembongan or viceversa (we now know that), from the beach in Nusa Lembongan and got dropped in Sanur. We now need transpor from Sanur to the hotel we are staying… well, another battle. Once we got off the boat we had lots of transportation offers but these are the “local genius” which are very expensive because it is a local mafia. We had looked at UBER and GRAB and both operate in Sanur, unfortunately the local mafia and hotels have restrictions on which areas they can pick up passangers and we were not in the allowed area. Once we booked the first one using GRAB, he asked for more money than what the app said we were paying so I discussed with him and he ended up cancelling the ride. The second one, also using GRAB, asked us to walk around 10 minutes to meet him outside the banned area, which we agreed; however, in the meantime, he took another ride and went 20 minutes away from us… I ended up canceling the ride. The next one I booked was through UBER and we met easily and paid what the app said… actually way cheaper than GRAB. It is worth checking both apps as they have different ways of calculating the fare price so you can save some money by using one instead of the other one.

It took around 45 minutes navigating through the streets of different areas of Bali, until we reached D’Tegale Homestay, in upper Canguu. We booked a bungalow in a rural area by the rice fields. We are statying with Made and Wayan, a local couple that own the homestay, very friendly and can speak good English. The wooden bungalow is to die for, a Balinese style with detailed woodwork, nice bed, very clean, the bathroom does not have a roof so you can enjoy nature while taking a shower… magnificent place. We chilled out for a little bit and had lunch. In the afternoon we went for a walk around the rice fields, talked to the locals, got cucumbers from them, met some amazing people… and the best of all, they are all Made’s family members.

On April 2 we moved close to the beach, although the hotel selection was not so good this time… what a shithole we got, it look good on pictures but not so much in reality.

In the afternoon we went for a walk and then we met Aurore, an old French girl we met in Nepal several years ago, for dinner.

On April 3 we moved to Kuta, this time we made sure we picked a better hotel. We want a decent place where we can enjoy a swimming pool and relax a bit before our next country.

The next few days we spent them saying “no thank you” to all the annoying people trying to sell you everything on the street… it got to a point that some of the guys will offer us a service and then will say themselves “no thank you”, that was funny!

Food in Kuta was amazing, we went several times to the restaurant Warung Hati, where we had Beef Rendang, an amazing local dish.

Abril 27 - 30 / April 27 - 30

Nos vamos de Nusa Penida hacia la isla donde inicialmente queríamos ir, Nusa Lembongan. Kadek, el dueño del hotel donde nos quedaos nos ofrecio llevarnos a la playa donde podemos tomar el bote que nos lleva al puente amarillo en Nusa Lembongan. Nos bajamos del carro y negociamos con un bote para que nos llevara, pero el nos dijo que teniamos que pagar el costo total del bote porque no habia nadie mas, asi que le dijimos que esperabamos a que hubiera mas gente… de un momento a otro hubo varios señores que querian cruzar, nos montamos al bote y nos fuimos. La gente aca en Indonesia ha aprendido todos los trucos para sacarle plata al turista, lo que no saben es que algunos de nosotros hemos viajado lo suficiente para saber cuando nos quieren cobrar mas de lo necesario. Al final terminamos pagando lo que Kadek nos dijo que era un precio justo.

Ya en Nusa Lembongan cogimos un tuk-tuk que nos llevo al hotel Jiva Guesthouse donde vamos a estar las próximas noches.

En la tarde del 27 de Abril fuimos a almorzar al restaurante de Jiva (Jiva’s Warung) en la playa. Estuvimos hablando con Jiva y preguntandole que nos recomendaba para hacer en la isla. Despues fuimos a ver el atardecer pero estuvo muy nublado.

El 28 de Abril salimos en un tour a caretiar en 3 diferentes lugares de la isla. El primer lugar fue la bahia Manta Bay, un lugar muy comun donde las mantarayas vienen a comer. El capitán paro el bote en el lugar donde siempre las ven pero no las pudimos encontrar; le pregunto a otros botes pero nadie las habia visto. Despues fuimos a un segundo lugar pero parece que nadie las habia visto, sin embargo yo vi a un grupo de turistas haciendo señales y llamando a otros amigos asi que asumi que las habian encontrado. Le dije que parecía que los otros turistas las habian visto pero la barrera del lenguaje no ayuda para nada. El ayudante del bote se tiro al agua y a los pocos segundos nos estaba gritando “manta, manta”… Yo me tire al agua inmediatamente y nade hacia donde nos habia dicho y pude ver una de ellas. Estuvimos nadando con ella un poquito hasta que se desaparecio. Segui buscandolas por todas partes hasta que la persistencia cobro frutos y pude ver dos manta rayas bastante grandes. Estos animales son espectaculares, la manera como se mueven en el agua, la agilidad que tienen y el tamaño… unas criaturas increibles! Apenas las vi llame a Marcela y la otra gente que estaba en el bote con nosotros para que las pudieran ver. Desafortunadamente hubo un par de personas que eran capaces de sumergirse bastante profundo y aguantar bajo el agua mucho rato y las empezaron a perseguir y a tomarles fotos y las espantaron. Un poco mas tarde pudimos ver otra. Fue una experiencia inolvidable haber podido compartir tiempo con semejantes animales.

Después estuvimos en la bahia Crystal Bay, una zona con corales blandos y duros y con muchos peces. Alli estuvimos por 45 minutos.

La ultima parada fue en el punto Mangrove Point, otra area con diferentes formaciones coralinas y muchos peces, pero no tan bonita como Crystal Bay. Fue un muy buen tour y a muy buen precio ya que Jiva nos consiguio un buen descuento.

En la tarde fuimos al bar Blue Corner a tomarnos una cerveza y a ver el atardecer, pero otra vez estuvo muy nublado.

El 29 de Abril Marcela se fue a bucear. La primera inmersion fue en la bahia Crystal Bay y la segunda en la bahia Manta Bay. Desafortunadamente no pudo ver ninguno de los animales que todo el que viene a bucear en esta zona espera ver, las manta rayas y el mola-mola. Las manta rayas, por alguna razon, no estaban en el area donde la mayoría de los dias van a comer y todavia no es la temporada para ver el mola-mola, aunque lo vieron hace unos días.

En la tarde fuimos al bar Blue Corner a tomarnos una cerveza y a ver el atardecer… pero claro que tambien habian nubes y no se vio nada.

El 30 de Abril alquilamos una moto y nos fuimos a dar una vuelta por la isla y a Nusa Ceningan, una isla pequeña entra Nusa Penida y Nusa Lembongan. Primero estuvimos en el restaurante de Jiva y tomamos un tour por el manglar. Por una hora estuvimos navegando en una canoa disfrutando de la tranquilidad del manglar, escuchando los pajaros y viendo saltar uno que otro pez cuando salen a comer.

Después estuvimos en Nusa Ceningan, la primera parada fue el punto Mahana Point, donde la gente va a saltar desde el acantilado. Alli estuvimos viendo gente saltar, incluyendo a un muchacho bastante profesional que estuvo mostrando sus habilidades. Despues estuvimos en la laguna Blue Lagoon.

Después cruzamos el puente amarillo de regreso a Nusa Lembongan y fuimos a la playa Mushroom Beach. Caminamos por la playa y nos encontramos una playa secreta pero teniamos que pasar por un hueco bastante estrecho en la roca… lo pudimos hacer sin mojarnos, no todo el mundo conto con la misma suerte. La playa estaba bonita, pero el mar estaba bastante bravo asi que decidimos devolvernos a la playa Mushroom Beach. Estuvimos refrescándonos en el mar un rato y nos devolvimos para el hotel antes que oscurezca. En el camino de regreso al hotel nos encontramos un mirador donde se ve todo el pueblo, una gran sorpresa porque nadie nos habia dicho que existia. Pasamos muy bueno manejando la motico por las dos islas.

La comina en Nusa Lembongan es deliciosa, Shamila nos recomendo el restaurante Warung Bamboo… este lugar es increíble. Todo lo que venden es exquisito, pero el atun envuelto en hoja de platano es adictivo.

We are leaving Nusa Penida and going to our initial intended destination Nusa Lembongan. Kadek, the guesthouse owner, offered to take us to the beach where we can get a boat to take us to the Yellow Bridge in Nusa Lembongan. We got off the car and negotiated with a boat to get us across, he pretended that there was nobody else so we had to pay a lot more but we said we will wait… all of a sudden several miracle people signed up for the boat and we were away in no time. They have learned all the tricks to get you, however some of us have been around the block for a little bit longer and know most of those tricks and how to play them. At the end we paid what Kadek told us it was the fair price.

Once in Nusa Lembongan we took a tuk-tuk to get us to Jiva Guesthouse where we will be sending the next couple of nights.

In the afternoon of April 27 we went for lunch at Jiva’s Warung (Jiva’s restaurant) by the beach. We stayed there talking to Jiva and getting some recommendations on what to do in the island. Late in the afternoon we went to see the sunset but it was too cloudy.

On April 28 we took a snorkeling tour. The first spot was Manta Bay, an area where it is common to see the manta rays because it is a regular feeding ground for them. The captain stopped at the normal spot but there were no manta rays to be found; he asked other boats but nobody had seen them. We went to a second spot and apparently nobody had seen them either, however I noticed some tourists in the water calling other friends and pointing down so I assumed they were there. I called the captain’s attention and told him they were very close by… he asked me if I had seen them and I said “no, but they are pointing at them”, however the English barrier did not allow for this point to go across. The boat helper jumped in the water to find them and in a few seconds he was yelling “manta, manta”… I immediately jumped in the water and swam to the area and was able to see one of them. We kept swimming with it for a little bit until it disappeared. Persistance is one of my biggest virtudes so I kept looking for them and I was rewarded with a sight of two big manta rays. They are spectacular, the way they move in the water, the agility and the size… what a beautiful creature! I called Marcela and other people to the area so everybody can see them. Unfortunately there were a couple of people that could go underwater for a very long time and very deep so they started taking pictures very close to them and scared them away. We were able to see one more later on. It was a great experience being in the water with such a big animal.

We then stopped at Crystal Bay, a nice area with different soft and hard coral formations and lots of different fish species. We were there for around 45 minutes.

The final spot was Mangrove Point, another area with coral formations and lots of fish, however not as impressive as Crystal Bay. Overall it was a nice tour and well worth the price, especially for us that got the “local price” through Jiva.

In the afternoon we went to Blue Corner for a beer and to watch the sunset but it was again too cloudy.

On April 29, Marcela went diving. She did two dives, one in Crystal Bay and the second one in Manta Bay. Unfortunately she could not see the two big animals this area is well know for, the manta rays and the mola-mola. The manta rays were not in the usual feeding ground for some reason and it is not a season yet for the mola-mola, even though it was seen a few days ago.

In the afternoon we went to Blue Corner to have a beer and watch the sunset… but you guessed it; there was a thick low cloud again.

On April 30 we rented a scooter to go around the island and visit Nusa Ceningan, a small island between Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. We first went to Jiva Warung to take a mangrove tour. For over an hour we went around the peaceful mangrove in a wooden boat, listening to the birds and watching the occasional fish jump out of the water to eat.

We then went to Nusa Ceningan, our first stop was Mahana Point, where people go cliff diving. We watch a couple of people jump, including a semi-professional diver who was showing off his skills. We then went to the Blue Lagoon.

We then crossed the yellow bridge back to Nusa Lembongan and navigated the roads to reach Mushroom Beach. We walked along the beach and found a secret beach but we had to trough a narrow passage under a rock… we managed to do it without getting wet. The beach was nice but the sea was too rough so we decided to go back to mushroom beach. We enjoyed the sea for a little bit and headed back to Jiva Guesthouse before it got dark. On the way back we found a nice viewpoint where we had a clear view of town, this was a very nice surprise as we did not know it existed. It was a nice day overall, we had fun driving the motorbike around both islands.

The food in Nusa Lembongan was amazing, Shamila recommended us to go to Warung Bamboo… well this place is just amazing. Everything they serve is nice, but their tuna in banana leaf is to die for.
