Vamos para Luang Namtha, un pequeño pueblo
en la parte noroeste de Laos muy cerca de la frontera con China. Llegamos a
Luang Namtha alrededor de 1:00 pm, nos registramos en el hotel y fuimos a
buscar información de una caminada que queremos hacer. Queremos hacer una
caminada de 2 días, pero como es temporada baja nadie está registrado para
hacer lo mismo por lo que tendríamos que pagar un montón de plata. Al final
decidimos unirnos a un grupo de 6 personas que harán un día de caminada y un
día de kayak.
Por la noche nos fuimos a dar un paseo por
la ciudad y a conocer el mercado nocturno.
Nos despertamos muy temprano el 28 de junio
y nos preparamos para nuestra caminada. La primera actividad era ir al mercado
para que el guía pudiera comprar los ingredientes del almuerzo; así que
estuvimos como 20 minutos caminando por el mercado local. Luego nos llevaron en tuktuk por unos 40
minutos hasta el comienzo de la caminada. El camino estaba
súper empantanado debido a toda la lluvia que ha caído en esta época del año. Al principio la caminada es a través de
campos de arroz y otras plantaciones, pero rápidamente se mete en la selva
densa. El camino se complica a
veces, ya que hay un montón de montañas, por lo que hay que subir y bajar
mucho. El clima tampoco ayuda; es
muy caliente y húmedo. Nos dieron
un almuerzo delicioso como al mediodía. Después de eso empezó a llover.
Llegamos a Nalan Neun, el pueblo en el que
vamos a dormir, como a las 5:00 pm. Comimos, tomamos un poco de vino de arroz
hecho en el pueblo y nos fuimos a la dormir.
El 29 de junio nos despertamos a las 7:00
am para desayunar y caminamos por el pueblo, hablamos con los locales y tomamos
fotos… un montón de fotos! Fue una
gran experiencia; Especialmente pasar tiempo con los niños, verlos jugar… uno
de ellos parece ser el mecánico más experimentado en el pueblo. Luego nos preparamos para salir en los
kayaks. Justo antes de comenzar el
viaje de kayak empezó a llover, el guía decidió esperar un poco para ver si se
mermaba la lluvia, pero sólo empeoró. Después de esperar alrededor de una hora decidimos comenzar a
remar por el río Nam Ha. Marcela
iba con el guía y yo iba con un tipo británico que nunca había montado en
kayak, y desde el principio empezó a remar hacia atrás... desde ese momento
supe que iba a ser un día largo!
Comencé a darle instrucciones y le dije lo
que tenía que hacer, pero él no estaba interesado en escucharme, así que me
tocó darme por vencido. El manejo
de un kayak de dos personas requiere trabajo en equipo, sin embargo, no estaba
interesado en trabajar conmigo en lo absoluto. Sabía que íbamos a tener
problemas cuando los rápidos se pusieran más fuertes… y tal como me lo había
imaginado nos metimos en problemas. En una curva del río con rápidos incluidos,
le pedí que remar en el lado izquierdo, pero él remo sólo dos veces y luego
cambió a la derecha y el kayak se choco con otro grupo que se había volcado
hacia unos segundos. Ambos terminamos en el agua, sin embargo la corriente se
llevó al británico río abajo y en el camino se tropezó contra una piedra que le
lastimo un hombro y así termino la experiencia de kayak para él, pues tuvo que
terminar el recorrido con otro equipo. Yo seguí solo en el kayay, pero estaba
muy difícil controlarlo. Después de un rato le dije al guía que no quería
seguir solo, así que también termine con otro grupo.
Almorzamos en Namkoy, otro pueblo a lo
largo del río. Pasamos un rato con
una familia local, viendo la señora hacer pulseras y jugando con su nieta.
Pasamos por el cruce entre los ríos Nam Ha
y Nam Tha. Seguimos bajando por el
río Nam Tha hasta que llegamos a Sin Oudom donde se termino el viaje en kayak. Luego fuimos a dar un paseo por el
pueblo donde vimos señoras tejiendo cinturones e hilando tiras de bambú para
hacer sombreros. Los niños del pueblo
estaban felices con la visita y quería posar para todas las fotos.
Regresamos a Luang Namtha en un tuk-tuk. Luego salimos a comer con la gente que
conocimos en el paseo.

We are going to Luang Namtha, a small town
in the north west part of Laos very close to the border with China. We arrived in Luang Namtha at around
1:00pm, checked in at the hotel and went around looking for a trekking
trip. We want to do a 2 days
trekking, however as it is low season nobody is registered to do the same so we
will have to pay a lot of money.
At the end we decided to join a group of 6 people that will be doing one
day trekking and one day kayaking.
In the evening we went for a walk around
town and spent some time at the night market.
We woke up very early on June 28 and got
ready for our trekking tour. First
order of business was to go to the market so the tour guide could buy some
ingredients for lunch; so we spent around 20 minutes walking around the local
market. We then were driven around
40 minutes to the beginning of the trail.
The trail was muddy because of all the rain this area gets at this time
of the year. It starts through
rice fields and plantations, but quickly gets into dense jungle. The trail gets quiet tricky at times as
there are a lot of mountains, so going up and down can wear you down. The weather does not help either; it is
very hot and humid. We had an
amazing lunch around noon. After
that it started raining and very heavy at times.
We got to Nalan Neun, the village we are
staying at around 5:00pm. We had
dinner, had a couple of shots of rice wine made at the village and went to bed.
On June 29 we woke up at 7:00am to have
breakfast and went for a walk around the village, talked to the locals and took
pictures… lots of pictures! It was
a great experience; especially spending time with the kids, watching them play…
one of them seems to be the most experienced mechanic in the village. Then we
started to get ready to go on the kayaks.
Just before starting the kayak trip it started raining, the tour guide
decided to wait for a little bit to see if it will stop, however it only got
worse. After waiting for about one
hour we collectively decided to start paddling down the Nam Ha river. Marcela is going with the tour guide
and I am going with a British guy who started paddling backwards right from the
get go… it is going to be a long day!
I started giving him instructions and couching him on what to do but he
was not interested in listening, so I gave up after a while. Handling a two people kayak requires
team work, however he was not interested in working with me at all. I knew at some point we were going to
be in trouble if the rapids were a bit stronger than the first one we
encounter... and sure enough we got into trouble. There was a river bend with rapids included, I asked him to
paddle on the left side, but he paddle only twice and then switch to the right
and the kayak went over another group that had capsized a few seconds
earlier. We both ended up on the
water, however the current took him down the river and he stumble against some
rocks injuring his shoulder. That was
the end of the kayaking experience for him, as he had to ride with another
team. I continued alone in the
kayay, but it was very difficult to control it. After a while I told the guide I did not want to continue
alone so I also rode with another group.
We had lunch at Namkoy, a small village
along the river. We spent some
time with a local family, watching the lady making bracelets and playing with
the little girl, she was adorable!
We go to the confluence between the Nam Ha
and Nam Tha rivers. We kept going
down the Nam Tha River for a while until we reached Sin Oudom where we finished
the kayaking trip. We then went
for a walk around the village where we saw ladies weaving belts and threading
bamboo strips, for later use in hats.
The kids in the village were particularly curious about us and wanted to
pose for a picture or two… well, maybe more!
We headed back to Luang Namtha by car. We then went for dinner with our new
friends.
