Agosto 5 - 12 / August 5 - 12

We left Vietnam last night at 10:00pm on a flight bound to Manila.  We arrived in Manila at 1:45am, got comfortable at the airport where we slept on the floor for a few hours and woke up to catch a flight to Puerto Princesa in the province of Palawan.  Leaving Vietnam was not short of drama, at the Cebu Pacific counter we were asked for an outbound ticket which we did not have so we had to buy a ticket to leave Philippines.  The cheapest ticket we can find was for September 12 going to Brunei… so I guess we are going to Brunei after our visit to Philippines.

Upon arrival in Manila there was another drama… visa!  We could only get 30 days visa on arrival although we had read that it was easy to get a 60 days visa on arrival.  Apparently the 60 days visa on arrival is not available anymore so we will have to extend our visa at one of the immigration offices… we will see how that goes!

At the Manila airport we found two companies selling SIM Cards so we decided to buy one.  After looking at the options and coverage we decided to buy from SMART, a bit more expensive than the competitor GLOBE but apparently better coverage… we will see how it goes!

After a short flight from Manila we arrived in Puerto Princesa on August 5 at 11:00am.  We got out of the airport just to be bombarded by tour operators, taxi drivers and tricycle drivers all offering different things.  We had only slept a couple of hours in the past 24 hours and the last thing we wanted was people offering tours or transportation.  We got the first tricycle driver and agreed a price to be taken to the guesthouse we had chose and in a couple of minutes we left.

We arrived at the guesthouse, negotiated the price and went to sleep.  We woke up a few hours later and went out for a walk.  The first stop was lunch because we were starving.  We then walked around but there is not much to do in Puerto Princesa.  We went back to the guesthouse and arranged with the owner a tour to the underground river for tomorrow.  In the evening we went to have dinner and went for a walk around the food stalls and food court in town.

On August 6 we got picked up at 7:30am to go to the underground river.  Driving to Sabang takes around 2 hours, however all the paper work in Puerto Princesa as well as in Sabang takes a lot longer.  We had some free time in Sabang before going to the underground river so we went for a walk along the beach.  This beach is as good as it gets, crystal clear water, white sandy beach, warm water and a long beach to go for a good stroll… what else can you ask for?

We had an early lunch as per our tour guide’s suggestion and then we embarked on the underwater river adventure, one of the new 7 wonders of nature.

We were taken from Sabang to the beach where the entrance to the underground river is located, after a 2 minute walk we were at a small jetty.  We were given an audio guide and we boarded a rowing boat that will take us into the cave through the underground river.

The experience is awesome, the cave has endemic species of bats and spiders.  The rock formation is also beautiful.  The whole trip takes 40 minutes and it is well worth it!

In the late afternoon we went to the waterfront for a walk and see the sunset.  We had dinner at a local restaurant, served on banana leaf we had a variety of seafood, chicken satay, kinalaw (tuna ceviche) and vegetables.

August 7 was packed with a different adventure… visa extension.  Getting information online or in Puerto Princesa about visa renewal was very difficult.  There was conflicting information so we had to figure it out on our own.  We walked to a supposed building where we could have it done but unfortunately nobody knew where the address was or knew the name of the building.  We soon gave up on trying to find that address and got to a different one.  We got to the Bureau of Immigration and after getting a couple of photocopies of our passport, filling out a form and paying the fees we got our visa for 30 more days… did I mention we had to put up with the angriest secretary we had ever met?  She thought she was in charge… well, she was but did not have any reason to act like the way she did!

We came back to the hotel, packed our backpacks and took a jeepney to the bus station.  Once we arrived at the bus station we got a mini van to Port Barton.  In the afternoon we went for a walk on the beach and came across a diving shop; here we met Martin and will possibly be diving with them.  We took it easy for the rest of the afternoon and enjoyed a beautiful sunset.

On August 8, I decided to get my open water diving certificate with Aquaholics, this is where Martin works.  In the morning I watched all the videos and in the afternoon I did all the theory required so I could go diving the next day and practice what I learned.  Again another beautiful sunset today!

On August 9, I went diving with Martin and Babs, she is the assistant instructor.  This is the reason why I chose the diving shop, I will have the attention of two people on me.  We did three immersions where I practiced what I learned from the theory and videos and performed the exercises that Martin demonstrated.

August 10 brought three more immersions.  It was amazing and having Martin as instructor was a bonus, he is very knowledgeable and patient.

On August 11 we went for an island hopping tour.  We visited several places, went snorkeling and had an amazing lunch prepared by the boatman and the tour guide.

In the morning of August 12 we got a kayak from Aquaholics, the diving shop, and went for a tour around the area.  We visited White Beach and the mangrove, what a beautiful place.  Unfortunately we could not go swimming at White Beach because of jelly fish, nevertheless it was a great day!
