Mayo 21 - 24 / May 21 - 24

Unfortunately there are not direct buses from Mrauk-U to Bagan.  There are three options to get there.  The first one is to take a bus to Kyauk Padaung and from there it is a one hour ride to Bagan, of course this is the preferred option, unfortunately there are no seats available in this bus.  The second option is to take a bus to Mandalay but get off at Magway, try to catch a bus to Bagan, however it is uncertain if we can catch a bus right away or we will have to spend the night in Magway and continue the next day.  The third option is to go all the way to Mandalay and take a bus from there to Bagan but it is a bit longer.

We got on the bus to Mandalay and will make a decision where to get off, Magway or Mandalay… we have around 14 hours before we need to decide.

We left Mrauk-U on May 20 at 9:00am on the shittiest bus ever.  Apparently all the good buses going to Mandalay were full so we got two seats on the only available bus.  They had told us that it was and AC bus, however it will not make it up the hills with the AC on… crossing the hills takes around 10 hours, just the time when the AC is needed.

It was a painful trip to say the least.  It was hot and opening the window had an additional risk… because of the bitter nut they chew in Myanmar, they have to spit all the time, so we could risk getting spit on by the men sitting in front of us… as a matter of fact we had a couple of close calls until I told them not to spit out of the window anymore.

Buses in Myanmar have not been the greatest, however are part of the experience.  We are looking forward to a different type of transport… maybe the train is nicer.

We decided to go all the way to Mandalay as it was around 9:00pm when we drove by Magway and most likely we could not get a bus to Bagan; getting a room that late at night could be difficult.  We got to Mandalay at 4:30am.  The first bus leaving for Bagan is at 6:30am so we had some tea and biscuits.

We finally arrived in Bagan on May 21 at 11:45am after almost 27 hours by bus.  We are staying in a very nice hotel with a swimming pool (it was the best deal in Bagan and we could not help it).  We slept pretty much all day.  In the late afternoon we rented an electric scooter and went to visit one of the temples and see the sunset… of course Mother Nature had different plans.  It started raining very hard so we had to wait inside the temple.  Once it stopped a little bit a gentleman told us to go or we will have to wait for a while because there was going to be a second round and it was going to be very heavy rain.  We took his advice and started driving, but we were very far from the hotel and the scooter does not drive too fast so we got caught by the rain half way.  We stopped and weathered the rain inside a temple.  We finally made it to the hotel before dark.

On May 22 we arranged a tour with a local guide to show us some of the temples.  Min, our guide, was very knowledgeable and professional.  We drove around the area in electric scooters and got a sense of the history of this place.

The next day we spent it visiting more temples around Bagan.  We rented a scooter and went around on our own. By the way electric scooters are the only ones allowed in the temple area.

There are more than 2000 temples around the area so visiting them all is impossible, however we visited the most important ones.

On May 24 we went for our last sunrise in Bagan.  We headed to one of the temples that people can still climb and witnesses a beautiful sunrise.

At 8:00am we left on a minivan to Kalaw.  Another unpleasant drive.  The minivan did have AC, however the driver’s window did not close so all the hot air was coming in, defeating the purpose of the AC.  We arrived in Kalaw at 3:30pm.

In the evening we went to a small restaurant with a great salesperson, very helpful and amicable.  It was his birthday and when we found out we went to the nearest store and got him some presents.
