Mayo 15 - 16 / May 15 - 16

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We left Bago at 8:30am on a bus to Pyay.  The bus went south to Yangon where we changed buses.  The new bus was loaded with hundreds of egg baskets, a motorcycle and many other items to be delivered along the journey.  We reached Pyay around 4:30pm, checked-in at the hotel and headed for Shwesandaw Pagoda, one of the major pilgrimage sites in Myanmar (Burma).  The site is quite spectacular and it was very quiet.  The view of the city is also very nice.

In the early evening the clouds rolled in and provided a very dramatic skies and very nice colors for the photos.

We then went across the road to Sehtatgyi Paya, a temple with a massive sitting Buddha.  Sehtatgyi meaning “Big Ten-Story” for its height… well, not quite the equivalent to a ten story building but maybe eight.

On May 16 we left Pyay for Mrauk-U.  We purchased tickets for the 1:00pm bus, however, as most of the buses in Myanmar (Burma), it was running late.  The bus arrived at the bus station in Pyay at 3:00pm.  We got the last two seats on the bus… right on the last row and I had the middle seat, the only advantage was the legroom.

The bus ride was not the most pleasant one.  It drives through the countryside on very narrow and poorly paved roads.  Once we were falling asleep a massive bump woke us up and being on the back of the bus we were feeling every bump a bit more.

The area we are heading in somewhat still a conflict area in Myanmar (Burma).  The local people do not want anybody that does not belong in the area to enter in their territory, so they have created several checkpoints.  We were woken up several times during the night to provide our passport and talk to the officials to grant us permission to get in the area.  They operate as a separate state, the checkpoints have “immigration” offices, police, etc; although it is not official and they do not stamp the passports.

We finally arrived in Mrauk-U after 14 and a half hours at 5:30am, went to the hotel and the owner was kind enough to allow us to check-in right away so we could sleep a bit.
