Our backpacking trip: Dia 271 / Day 271

Despues de una noche muy buena en el tren llegamos a la estacion de Varanasi en donde reservamos los tiquetes del tren para las proximas dos ciudades y evitar noches como las anteriores.

En Varanasi teniamos reservado un hotel y nos habian dicho que alguien nos recogia en la estacion. Cuando llegamos a la estacion nos encontramos con el señor, pero mientras compramos los tiquetes para las otras paradas, el señor se desaparecio. Cuando estabamos listos para irnos otro señor dijo que el tambien trabajaba para el mismo hotel y hasta saco una tarjeta. Llegamos al hotel y nos instalamos, cuando estaba llenando la informacion en la forma y el libro llamo el primer señor furioso diciendo que porque no lo habiamos esperado… el señor alego con el dueño del hotel y despues me pusieron a que yo le explicara que habia pasado. Desafortunadamente no habia nada que explicar, otro señor le robo los clientes y la comision en el hotel; si entre ellos mismos se hacen cosas asi que se puede esperar que le hagan al turista. Realmente no se le puede creer a nadie!

Despues de almorzar en el hotel salimos en un tour guiado por la ciudad donde visitamos algunos de los templos y sitios de interes. Tambien estuvimos en unos sitios con una vista muy bonita del rio Ganges. La parte cerca al rio Ganges es de calles muy estrechas donde solamente transitan motos, personas y vacas; aun asi es super caotica y bastante sucia.

Varanasi es la ciudad mas sagrada para los Hindus y como tal tiene cientos de templos. Todo Hindu debe venir a Varanasi al menos una vez en su vida y bañarse en el rio Ganges.

Por la noche tomamos un tour en bote por el rio Ganges hasta Dasashwamedh ghat, donde cada noche hay rituales religiosos para bendecir el rio. A este lugar llegan decenas de botes con turistas y gente local para presenciar la ceremonia. La gente compra velas con flores en canastas y las ponen a flotar en el rio.

El paseo en bote incluye pasar por Manikarnika ghat, el lugar donde hacen la mayoria de cremaciones de cuerpos en Varanasi. Este lugar hace cremaciones 24 horas al dia y se calcula que alrededor de 150 a 200 cuerpos son cremados diariamente.

After a very good night on the train we arrived in Varanasi. We made reservations for the next two cities to avoid nights like the previous ones.

In Varanasi we had made a reservation at a guesthouse and they told us that they will have somebody in the station to pick us up. When we arrived we met the guy that was going to take us to the hotel, however while we bought the tickets for the next stops the guy disappeared. When we left the ticket office another man told us that he also works for the same guesthouse and even pulled out of his wallet a business card, so we went with him. We arrived at the guesthouse, settle in our room and when I was filling out the registration forms the first guy called furious asking why we had not waited for him… the guy and the owner argued for a little bit and then he put him on the phone so I can explain to him, however there was nothing to explain, he disappeared and another guy told us that he works for the same guesthouse so we came with him. The other guy stole his customer and the guesthouse’s commission; this is unbelievable… if they do these type of things among themselves how can we expect they treat the tourist. We cannot really trust anybody!

After lunch we went on a guided tour around the city where we visited some of the temples and interest sites. We also went to some places with a nice view of Ganges river. The area around the river was built with very narrow streets where motorcycles, cows and people share them; however it is very caotic and dirty.

Varanasi is the Holiest city for Hindus and has numerous temples. Every Hindu must come to Varanasi at least once in his/her life and take a bath in the Ganges river.

In the evening we took a boat tour along the Ganges river unti Dasashwamedh ghat, where very evening the Holy man perform religious rituals to bless the river. There are several hundreds of people coming to this place by boat to attend the ceremony. Pleople buy candles and flower in small baskets and let them float on the river as offers.

The boat tour passes by Manikarnika ghat, the burning ghat where most bodies are cremated in Varanasi. There are cremations 24 hours per day in this place and it is estimated that around 150 to 200 people are cremated here everyday.
