Today we are going to celebrate Holi, a very important
celebration in India. Holi is the
colours festival where they celebrate the arrival of spring and ask for a good
harvest and fertile soil.
The essence of Holi is to place coloured powder in the other
person’s face and receive coloured poweder from the other person.
We left the hotel at 10:00am and walked around the streets
but did not have powder, however people wanted to celebrate with us and they
painted our faces of different colours.
We went to the train station to buy our tickets to go to Agra, Khajuraho
and Varanasi.
We left the station and found a place to buy coloured
powder. We went downtown, walked
around the Hawa Mahal where there were lots of people celebrating. Later we walked to the City Palace
where there were more tourists… everybody was having a lot of fun. Lots of people came by motorcycles,
painted our faces and left. During
this festival people drink a lot and they also consumed a lot of weed either
smoking, drinking or eating it; so as the day progresses the intensity
increases… the police presence especially in the tourist areas is very
strong. The locals take advantage
of female tourists to hug them and touch them… ask Marcela! The police intervene and hit one of the
guys with a stick. The situation
was getting out of control so we took a Tuk Tuk and went to the hotel… well,
not so fast! The Tuk Tuk driver offered
to take us around the “Pink City” how it is known the old city in Jaipur and we
accepted… to our sorprise we ended up in the Tuk Tuk driver’s home and we ended
up taking to his family. They are
muslims so they do not celebrate Holi.
They were very welcoming and invited us to stay, however we had coloured
powder all over so we rejected their invitation.
At the hotel we took a shower trying to get all the colour
from our bodies. There are certain
colours that fix to your body very well, so they will not come out for a few
days… Marcela is still trying to get some red colour off her.
The rest of the afternoon we spent at the hotel, watching
people go by and updating the blog.
