El 3 de octubre comenzamos a las 5:30am con
nuestro crucero. Lamentablemente, no vimos mucho, solo un lagarto y algunas
aves.
A las 10:00am fuimos a caminar por la selva.
Después de un corto paseo en bote, entramos a la selva por un pequeño camino.
Caminamos durante una hora, pero nuevamente no vimos más que una rana y unos
insectos. Desde el bote el capitán encontró una culebra pitón descansando en la
rama de un árbol. Esta todavía pequeña, pero sigue siendo un animal hermoso.
El crucero por la tarde trajo un poco más de
vida silvestre a la mesa. Vimos monos narigudos, macacos, martines pescadores,
águilas y otros diferentes tipos de aves.
En el crucero por la noche tuvimos la suerte de
encontrar una culebra pitón nadando en el río ... no sabíamo que son tan buenas
nadadoras! También encontramos algunas aves y un felino, pero él guía no supo
bien que era.
El 4 de octubre fue nuestro último crucero del
río Kinabatangan. Empezamos temprano... nuevamente a las 5:30am, vimos muchos
pájaros... pero la naturaleza había guardado lo mejor de último. Justo antes
de que el crucero terminara, el guía encontró orangutanes salvajes, tres de
ellos estaban jugando en lo alto de un árbol. Fue impresionante verlos en su
hábitat y, muy probablemente, acabando de levantarse de una muy buena noche.
¡Qué escena para terminar un par de días llenos de aventura, naturaleza y vida
silvestre! Dejamos a estos tres "hombres del bosque" sabiendo que su
hábitat, algún día, se convertiría en una plantación de aceite de palma y tendrán
que encontrar un nuevo hogar y adaptarse a nuevos desafíos. Nosotros, los
humanos, somos el mayor problema de estos animales; estamos, directa o
indirectamente, destruyendo su bosque.
Quiero aprovechar la oportunidad para invitarlos
a que considere dos veces comprar productos con aceite de palma, el principal
factor que contribuye a la deforestación de Borneo. Es triste ver desde el aire
como todavía están cortando árboles para dar paso a nuevas plantaciones...
¿cuándo va a parar?
Después de nuestro crucero desayunamos y regresamos
en una minivan a Sepilok Jungle Resort, donde pasaremos la noche.
Por la tarde, fuimos al Rainforest Discovery
Center para buscar la ardilla voladora gigante. Las habíamos visto brevemente
la última vez que estuvimos allí, pero ahora sabemos dónde se esconden, así que
esperamos poder verlas mejor. Llegamos al lugar dónde las habíamos visto antes justo
antes de las 6:00pm y, efectivamente, salieron de sus madrigueras y
comenzaron a volar. Pudimos ver algunas de ellas, desafortunadamente oscurece
muy rápido.
Más tarde fuimos a un paseo nocturno autoguiado
buscando los loris o tarsiers ... pero definitivamente no tenemos el ojo, oído
u olfato entrenado para encontrar nada en la selva y mucho menos de noche.

On October 3 we started at 5:30am with our
morning cruise. Unfortunately we
did not see much, just a lizard and a few birds.
At 10:00am we went for a jungle walk. After a short boat ride we entered the
jungle through a small path. We
walked for an hour but again did not see more than a frog and few insects. When on the boat the captain spotted a
python snake relaxing on a tree branch.
It is a small snake compared to what they become when they are fully
grown adults but still a beautiful animal.
The afternoon cruise brought a bit more wildlife
to the table. We saw proboscis
monkeys, macaques, kingfishers, eagles and different types of birds.
In the evening cruise we had the fortune to find
a python snake swimming in the river… we didn’t know how good swimmers the
snakes are, wow! We also found
some birds and a feline but the guide did not know the name.
On October 4 we had our last cruise before
departing the Kinabatangan River.
We had an early morning start… again 5:30am. We spotted lots and lots of hornbills and a few birds… but
nature had saved the best for last for us. Just before the river cruise ended the guide spotted wild
orangutans, there were three of them playing high up on a tree. It was breathtaking to see them in the
wild, in their habitat and most probably just waking up from a good night of
sleep. What a scene to end a
couple of days packed with adventure, nature and wildlife watching! We left these three “man of the forest”
knowing that their habitat will, one day, be converted into a palm oil
plantation and they will have to find a new home and adapt to new
challenges. We, humans, are the
biggest predator for these animals; we are, directly or indirectly, destroying
their forest. I want to take the
opportunity to invite you to consider twice when buying products with palm oil,
the main contributing factor in the deforestation of Borneo. It is sad to see from the air that they
are still chopping down trees to make way for new plantations… when is it going
to stop?
After our morning cruise we had breakfast and
took the minivan back to Sepilok Jungle Resort where we will be spending the
night.
In the afternoon we went to the Rainforest
Discovery Centre to look for the Giant Flying Squirrel. We had seen them briefly last time we
were there but now we know where they hide so hopefully we have a better chance. We got into position just before 6:00pm
and sure enough, they came out of their burrows and started gliding. We were able to see a few of them,
unfortunately it gets dark very quickly.
Later we went for a self-guided night walk
looking for the slow loris or tarsiers… well, let me tell you we did not see
much!

Muchos tipos de pájaros raros y lindos. Si que lastima que los humanos acabemos con las selvas para sembrar Palma, pero sino entonces de que viven? o hay otras alternativas?. Es que definitivamente cada día somos mas humanos habitando esta tierra. No se que ira a ser del planeta dentro de poco con tanta sobre población. Mas gente, mas carros, ms motos, mas edificaciones....mas....mas....mas.
