Junio 19 - 22 / June 19 - 22

El 19 de junio fuimos al Consulado de Vietnam a pedir nuestra visa para Vietnam, mientras aprueban la visa tendremos que quedarnos en Luang Prabang por unos días.

Por la tarde nos fuimos a PhouSi Mountain, la vista de Luan Prabang es increíble. Esperamos el atardecer pero fue otra decepción pues habían un montón de nubes. Por la noche fuimos al mercado nocturno, es un gran mercado y mucha gente lo visita. ¡La comida es excelente!

El 20 de junio fuimos a visitar algunos templos alrededor de la ciudad. Hay más de 30 templos en Luang Prabang por lo que uno debe ser selectivo a la hora de escoger cuáles visitar. Elegimos visitar alrededor de 9... créanme, después de ver 5 o 6 todos parecen iguales! Algunos de ellos tienen pinturas y tallas de madera muy bonitas. No los visitamos todos en el mismo día… continuaremos mañana.

El 21 de junio nos despertamos a las 5:30 de la mañana para ver el "Alms giving"; donde los locales y turistas dan comida, principalmente arroz, a los monjes locales. El "Alms giving" ha sido una tradición durante siglos y ahora es una atracción turística muy popular. Los monjes salen del monasterio y caminan alrededor de la manzana recogiendo la comida antes de regresar al monasterio a desayunar. Desafortunadamente algunos turistas no se adhieren al código de conducta para una tradición tan hermosa y arruinan la experiencia para todos.

Luego fuimos al mercado... este comienza muy temprano; desde las 5:30am las señoras estaban organizando sus productos al lado de la carretera con la ayuda de linternas. Otro mercado interesante, ver los productos que venden y las batallas de negociación que ocurren es un muy entretenido. Algunos de los puestos están bien organizados, mírenlo en las fotos.

A las 8:00 am nos recogieron para ir en barco por el río Mekong a visitar un pueblo y una cueva. Nos embarcamos en un barco de madera y a las 2 horas llegamos a Xanghay, también conocido como el pueblo del whisky. La atracción principal en este pueblo es el vino de arroz y el whisky de arroz, así como productos de ropa que las señoras hacen en sus telares. Pasamos alrededor de media hora aprendiendo sobre el proceso de hacer vino de arroz, whisky de arroz y caminando por el pueblo. Marcela no pudo contenerse y compró una bufanda.

Luego nos fuimos para las cuevas Tham Ting y Tham Phum. En Tham Ting se pueden ver estatuas de Buda de todas las formas, colores y materiales.  No hay mucho que ver en términos de estructura de la cueva.  Subiendo las escaleras llegamos a la cueva de Tham Phum; esta es una cueva muy oscura así que la única manera de ver un poco dentro de ella es con una linterna.  Nuevamente hay más estatuas de Buda. Regresamos a Luang Prabang alrededor de la 1:30 pm.

Por la tarde visitamos el Museo del Palacio Real. Esto era la casa del rey, pero ahora se ha convertido en un museo bien organizado. Desafortunadamente no permiten tomar fotos para preservar los artefactos dentro del museo.

En la tarde visitamos más templos pero todavía no hemos terminado con los 9 que elegimos.

En la mañana del 22 de junio fuimos al consulado vietnamita a recoger nuestros pasaportes; ya tenemos una visa de un mes a partir del 4 de Julio.

Luego nos fuimos a visitar los templos que nos faltaban en la lista... misión cumplida!

Por la tarde nos recogieron para ir a las cascadas Kuang Si. Esta cascada es hermosa, dicen que es la más bonita del mundo… tal vez no sea la mejor, pero si vale la pena visitarla. Dentro del parque hay un proyecto de conservación para los osos asiáticos negros. Tienen alrededor de 23 osos, y varios de ellos que han sido rescatados de los cazadores.

On June 19 we went to the Vietnamese Consulate to get our visa for Vietnam, so we will have to stay in Luang Prabang for a few days.

In the afternoon we went to PhouSi Mountain, the view of Luan Prabang is amazing.  We stayed for sunset but again another dissapointment, as there were a lot of clouds.  In the evening we went to the night market, it is a big market and lots of people visit it through the night.  The food was great!

On June 20 we went to visit some temples around the city.  There are more than 30 temples in the Luang Prabang City area so one has to choose which ones to visit.  We chose to visit around 9 of them… believe me, but the time you see 5 or 6 they all look the same!  Some of them have amazing paintings and wood carvings.  We did not visit all of them on the same day, we will continue another day.

On June 21 we woke up at 5:30am to see the “Alms giving”; where the locals and tourists give food, mainly rice, to the local monks.  The “Alms giving” has been a tradition for centuries and now it is a very popular tourist attraction. The monks come out of the monastery and walk around the block collecting the food before returning to the monastery to have breakfast.  Unfortunately some tourists do not adhere to the code of conduct for such a beautiful tradition and ruin the experience for some of us.

We then went to the morning market… this starts very early in the morning; when we go to town to see the “Alms giving” the ladies were setting up the produce on the side of the road with the help of flashlights.  Another interesting market, seeing the products they sell and the negotiation battles that happen is an entertaining exercise.  Some of the stalls are neatly set up, take a look at the pictures.

At 8:00am we got picked up to go on a boat trip along the Mekong River to visit a traditional village and a cave.  We embarked on a wooden boat and headed up the river.  Just over 2 hours later we reached Xanghay, also known as Whiskey Village.  The main attraction on this village is rice wine and rice whiskey, as well as clothing products that the ladies make on their own weaving machines.  We spent around half hour learning about the process of making rice wine, rice whiskey and walking around the village.  Marcela could not contain herself and bought a beautiful scarf from one of the ladies.

We then headed to Tham Ting and Tham Phum caves.  In Tham Ting you can see all sort of Buddha statues, shapes, colours, materials, etc.  There is not much to see in terms of cave structure.  Walking up the stairs we reached Tham Phum cave; this is a very dark cave so using the flashlight is the only way to see a bit inside it.  Again there are more Buddha statues.  We were back in town around 1:30pm.

In the afternoon we visited the Royal Palace Museum.  This used to be the King’s house, but it has now been converted into a well preserved museum.  Unfortunately they do not allow to take photos to preserve the artefacts inside the museum.

In the late afternoon we visited more temples but still have not finish with the 9 we chose to visit.

In the morning of June 22 we went to the Vietnamese Consulate to pick up our passports; we got a one month visa starting on July 4.

We then headed to visit the remaining temples… mission accomplished!

In the afternoon we got picked up to go to Kuang Si Waterfalls.  This waterfall is beautiful, they claim to be the most beautiful in the world… maybe not the works best, but they are very nice.  Inside the park there is a conservation project for the asiatic black bears or moon bear.  They have around 23 bears, and several of them that have been rescued from poachers.
