Mayo 31 - Junio 1 / May 31 - June 1

We left early in the morning to take the train from Hsipaw to Pyin-Oo-Lwin.  We got to the train station at 8:30am to buy the tickets but they do not sell tickets in advance so we had to wait until 8:45am (time on the station’s clock) to buy the tickets.

The train left at 9:30am.  It is a very slow and bumpy ride, however it allows you to enjoy the ride and live a nice experience.  Locals are friendly and always want to know where you are from and how long you are staying in Myanmar.  The train stops in several towns and some stops are quite long… to the point that people get off the train and order curry or soups and sit to have lunch.

The highlight of this train ride is the Goteik Viaduct.  It is the highest in Myanmar measuring 102m above the canyon.  Built in 1899, it is an impressive piece of structural engineering.  The train slows down a lot to protect the fragile structure; taking around 6 minutes to travel the 689m long viaduct.

We arrived in Pyin Oo Lwin at 4:00pm and headed to the hotel.

Later we went for a walk around the area.  We went to the lake and saw a lot of fisherman trying their luck… well, they were mostly having a party, they were all drinking whiskey and beer.  The way they fish is quite particular, every one of them has at least 5 or 7 lines in the water and they are all next to each other; I cannot understand how they do not tangle.  We did only see one catching a very small fish but apparently that’s all they get and it is food on the table for the family.

In the morning of June 1 we got bicycles from the hotel and headed to the Gardens, the mayor attraction in Pyin Oo Lwin.  We walked along beautifully landscaped gardens, something we were not expecting.  It is an amazing place!

We returned to the hotel, grab our backpacks and headed to the train station.  We are catching the 4:40pm train to Mandalay.

The train ride is exciting; it runs through the mountains, there are a few tunnels and scary drops.

We arrived in Mandalay at 8:40pm, crossed the street and got to the hotel… very lucky to be this close from the train station.
