Our backpacking trip: Junio 13 - 15 / June 13

Vamos para Vang Vieng ...

Salimos a las 9:00 am en bus de Vientiane y llegamos a la 1:00 pm a Vang Vieng. Pasamos el resto de la tarde caminando por la ciudad y coordinando las actividades para los próximos días.

El 14 de Junio tomamos un tour para ver algunas cuevas, paseo en neumáticos en una de ellas y hacer kayak. Nos recogieron a las 8:00 am y después de manejar por unos 45 minutos fuera de la ciudad llegamos a Elephant Cave… es una pequeña cueva con una estalagmita en forma de "elefante", sin embargo tienes que tener muy buena imaginación para ver el elefante.

Luego caminamos por un pequeño pueblo y campos de arroz hasta llegar a la cueva para montar en neumáticos. Nos dieron los neumáticos, linternas y chalecos salvavidas y empezamos a entrar a la cueva. Hay una cuerda que va a lo largo de la cueva de la que te jalas para avanzar en contra de la corriente. En algunos puntos teníamos que levantarnos y caminar porque el agua estaba demasiado baja. Llegamos al final de la cueva y empezamos a regresar... nos encontramos con mucho tráfico de otros grupos que iban subiendo. No me imagino esto en la temporada alta!

Luego caminamos a la camioneta y nos llevaron al río, ahí almorzábamos y después salimos en los kayaks.

Navegamos en los kayaks río abajo por un par de horas, paramos a una descanso pequeño y continuamos hasta que llegamos a Vang Vieng.

Luego nos llevaron a la laguna azul ... bueno, madio azul. Debido a toda la lluvia en los últimos días, el color ya no es azul, pero sigue siendo muy bueno nadar en el agua fría para refrescarse. El paseo terminó alrededor de las 5:00 pm cuando volvimos a la ciudad.

El 15 de junio fuimos a visitar la cueva de Phapoungkham. Alquilamos una motico y salimos a las afueras de la ciudad hasta que llegamos a la cueva, como a media hora de camino. No había nadie más en la cuenca entonces exploramos cada centímetro de ella y tomé mil fotos!

Por la tarde fuimos a un mirador. Es un ascenso empinado, súper empinado. Según los letreros era una subida de 600m, pero nos pareció mucho más. La vista es impresionante, las montañas que rodean esta zona son hermosas. Los campos de arroz están muy organizados y crean un paisaje de diferentes colores en el valle.

We are heading to Vang Vieng…

We left at 9:00am by bus from Vientiane and arrived at 1:00pm in Vang Vieng. We spent the rest of the afternoon walking around town and coordinating the activities for the next couple of days.

On June 14 we left on a tour to see some caves, tubing inside a cave and kayaking. We got picked up at 8:00am and after driving for about 45 minutes out of town we got to Elephant Cave… this is a small cave with an “elephant” stalagmite, however you need to have great imagination to see the elephant.

We then walked along a small village and rice fields until we reached the tubing cave. We were given tubes, flashlights and life jackets and started getting inside the cave. There is a rope that goes along the side of the cave, which we used to pull ourselves against the current. In some points we had to get up and walk because the water was too low. We reached the end of the cave and started heading back… we encounter a lot of traffic in some areas with other groups heading upstream. I cannot imagine this in the busy season!

We then walked back to the truck and drove to the river. We had lunch and got onto the kayaks.

We kayaked down the river for a couple of hours, stopped for a drink and continued until we reached Vang Vieng.

We then got onto the truck again and headed for the blue lagoon… well, sort of blue. Due to all the rain in the past few days the colour is not blue anymore but it is still nice to get in the cold water to cool off.

Our trip finished around 5:00pm when we returned to town.

On June 15 we went to visit Phapoungkham Cave. We rented a scooter and drove out of town for about half an hour until we reached the cave. We had this cave all to ourselves, we explored every inch of it and took lots of pictures.

In the afternoon we went to a viewpoint. It was a steep ascend, very steep. According to the information at the bottom of the hill it was a 600m walk, however it seemed a lot more. The view was impressive; the mountains surrounding this area are stunning. The rice fields are all well organized and provide a great view of the different colours on the valley.
