Our backpacking trip: Abril 18 - 19 / April 18

Escogimos un buen hotel para los proximos dias para poder descansar un poco y disfrutar del sol y una piscina. Los hoteles en esta zona no son muy caros pero si muy buenos y el servicio increible.

Ayer negociamos un tour para ir a ver delfines. De acuerdo con lo que todo el mundo dice hay muchos delfines que vienen a comer en esta area todos los dias por la mañana al amanecer.

A las 5:45am del 18 de Abril nos encontramos con el capitan de la canoa que nos va a llevar a ver los delfines. Nos embarcamos en “We are One” una canoa angosta y larga con un par de soportes externos para darle estabilidad y un motor fuera de borda de 15 caballos. Fuimos a donde normalmente se ven pero no los pudimos encontrar. Despues de 20 minutos de busqueda los vimos a la distancia y nuestro capitan no dudo en metersela toda a “We are One”. Habian varias familias y en unas de ellas habian crias. Es muy bonito ver estos animales libres y disfrutando de su ambiente; desafortunadamente es triste ver como docenas de botes persiguen a estas manadas de delfines hasta que se meten debajo del agua y cambian de curso y nadie los puede ver. Despues de presenciar semejante atropello contra estos animales le pedimos al capitan que abandonara la persecucion y nos llevara a la siguiente actividad del dia, caretiar. Es increible ver como estas mandas de delfines siguen viniendo a las mismas aguas todos los dias a comer y ser perseguidos por docenas de botes tratando de que los clientes vean por un par de segundos los delfines porque de un momento a otro ellos se sumergen y camian de curso con mucha mas facilidad que los botes. Desafortunadamente tienen que volver a salir a respirar y vuelven a ser acosador por otro capitan inconsciente.

Estuvimos caretiando por algo mas de una hora en un area muy bonita, con muchas clases de peces y especies de corales. Regresamos al hotel a eso de las 9:30am y pasamos el dia descansando y disfrutando de la piscina.

El 19 de Abril fue igual que ayer, piscina y descanso. En a tarde caminamos a Lovina y contratamos un conductor para que nos mostrara la zona y nos dejara en Ubud.

Desafortunadamente movilizarse en Bali es bastante dificil a no ser que uno este dispuesto a pagar bastante dinero en conductores privados. No hay mucho transporte publico y parece ser uno de los secretos mejores guardados de Bali… nadie sabe del transporte publico y nadie dice nada.

We chose a decent hotel for the next few days so we can rest a bit and enjoy the sun and a swimming pool. It is not too expensive but very comfortable and the service is incredible.

Yesterday we booked a dolphing watching tour. According to what everybody says, there are many bottlenose dolphins that come to feed in the area every morning before sunrise.

At 5:45am on April 18 we met our boat driver who will take us to see the dolphins. We embarked in “We are One”, a narrow but long canoe with two outriggers for stability and a 15HP outboard engine. We started going to the spotting grounds but there were no dolphins to be found… this always happen with wildlife. After around 20 minutes of searching we saw them in the distance so our boat driver raced “We are One” to the area. There were several pods and in some of them were some calves. It was beautiful to see these animals in the wild; however the way the boat drivers chase them was very sad, to the point that we asked our driver to stop doing it at take us to the next activity of the tour, snorkeling. It is unbelievable that these dolphins keep doming every morning to feed and get chased by several dozens of boats all of them trying to get their customers to see the dolphins, however once the first boat chases them they go underwater and change direction way faster than what the boats can do. They will eventually emerge again just to be chased again by another crazy boat driver.

We went snorkeling for over 1 hour in a very nice spot with a lot of fish and different coral species. We went back to the hotel around 9:30am and spent the day by the pool.

April 19 was more of the same… we enjoyed the day by the pool. In the afternoon we walked to Lovina and arranged with a driver to take us around the area and drop us off in Ubud tomorrow. Moving in Bali is very difficult unless you are willing to fork a lot of money in private drivers. There is not much public transport, or at least that’s what they make you believe and it could be one of the most well kept secrets of Bali… nobody knows anything about public transport and nobody wants to talk about it.
