Dia 318 / Day 318 - May 16/2013

Today we went to visit the genocide site Choeung Ek, better known as “The Killing Fields”.  Located 17Km from Phnom Penh, this is the place where the Khmer Rouge regime killed and buried 8,895 people between 1975 and 1979.

We then went to Tuol Sleng, better known as S21; which was the main detention centre during the Khmer Rouge regime.  This place used to be a school that was converted in a prison as soon as the regime took over the city and movilized all the citizens to the fields.  Everyone opposing the regime, intelectuals, professors, were brought here and then taken to one of the killing fields.  The pictures speak by themselves… one cannot imagine what people in this place went through.  The torture beds and the pictures of tortured and dead people on the walls are very shocking.

We then went to the King’s Palace.  This is a huge area in the City centre where there are several temples, stupas and monuments.

In the evening we walked along the Mekong river and took a look at some of the street food you can find in Cambodia.
