Dia 285 / Day 285 - April 13/2013

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We woke up very early in the morning to go for our flight over the Himalayas.  The airplane is very small, only 14 or 16 passengers.  We took off at 7:00am and after a few minutes we had passed the smog cloud that forms over Kathmandu.  A few minutes later we had in front of us one of the most beautiful landscapes we had seen, the Himalayas.  This mountain system has several of the highest peaks on earth, including the Everest that with 8,848 meter is a very impressive scene.  The trip is only one hour long, but we could see the Himalayas almost all the time, it was a beautiful experience and worth every penny.

We came back to the hotel, took a shower and went to the Kathmandu square, a place recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Site.  We took a guided tour where we learned about the temples and other places around the square.  This place is beautiful and the temples are spectacular, however there are areas that are not very well maintain and some of the temples and streets are very dirty… unfortunately they charge a lot of money to get into this area but it does not seem that the money is being used properly.  Finally we visited the Mahindra museum.

At around 4:00pm we tried to see Kumari, la diosa viviente de Kathmandu… they still have goddesses here.  The ritual to choose the goddess is a different story, it is selected since she is very young (2 or 3 years old) and has to meet 32 physical characteristics.  All the candidates are brought to a temple and locked in a room where men kill 108 animals and start making scary sounds… the one that scares the least is the chosen one.  After she is selected, she is sent to live in a house away from her parents where she has people that makes everything for her, she cannot even walk or touch the floor, they carry her around.  This girl only touches the floor 4 times a year and it is over a while carpet in the garden of the house where she lives.  Kumari can be visited by tourist in the morning and afternoon from the courtyard of the house where she lives, however Hindus can go upstairs to see her and get her blessing.  The Kumari stops being a goddess as soon as she has the first menstrual cycle or if she looses a significant amount of blood; at that time the search for a new Kumari starts.  Unfortunately we could not see her because it was the Lunar New Year’s celebration.

Today is Nepal’s New Year, they are celebrating the arrival of 2070.  The streets are full of people looking for a place to celebrate… the few bars and discotheques in Kathmandu are full and there are lots of people lining up.  The atmosphere is nothing compared with a New Year’s celebration somewhere else in the world, they even told us that the arrival of the Solar New Year was celebrated with more enthusiasm.
