Dia 279 / Day 279 - April 7/2013

We left Chandigarh at 8:00am by bus to New Delhi.  It was not too bad but the bus stops quite frequently.  We arrived at the bus station in New Delhi, however the bus to Banbasa leaves from another station.  We took a bus to go to the other station.

We arrived at the correct station and they told us that the bus to Banbasa was leaving at night, we had to wait more than 4 hours.  At the station we met Robin, a guy from Nepal that speaks good English and helped us a lot.  Robin will be taking the same bus to Banbasa.  While waiting for the bus to leave, two guys wearing women’s sarees (other people told us that they are gay) got on to the bus and demanded money from all men in the bus and every men gave them money.  They got really upset because I did not give them any money.  We asked Robin and other guys what was going on and they gave us two different versions: the first one is that they ask for bribes and if a man does not give them money they go and talk trash about them and say that they are gay and things like that.  The second version is that they believe that gay men will bless them, and this could be true because he touches every man’s head once he receives the money.  We still do not know the truth but we have seen this a couple of times in different trains.  We have to try to find the right reason.

We are the only tourists in the bus, actually there are no too many tourists crossing to Nepal through this border.  We left New Delhi at 6:30pm in a very poor condition bus, the seats are fixed at 90 degrees between the seat and the backrest… it is going to be a long night!  We tried to sleep a bit but it is very uncomfortable, the bus attendants are talking very loud and we cannot sleep.

Today is our last day in India, it was an incredible 7 weeks trip around the country.  Definitely the slogan Incredible India is the best description of the country, it could not be any better.  With all the frustrations, fights, scams and so alert we had to be it was an excellent experience.  This is a country with culture and costumes like no other.  It is a country that has lots of beautiful things to see but it is not a place to spend quiet holidays; traveling around India is an adventure and you need the holidays after being here.

To all the people we met along the way in India, all the Indian people we know in Canada and around the world and all of those that help us out during our stay in India we thank them from the bottom of our hearts.  Incredible India… we really enjoyed it!  To all the Tuk Tuk drivers and all of those that tried and pulled out a scam or two on us… we will be back to get you back!
