Septiembre 16 - 17 / September 16 - 17

On September 16 we left Bandar Seri Begawan.  In the morning we took a public bus to the city centre, then walked for a little bit until we reached the harbour where we got on a boat that took us to the main harbour.  From there we got onto a fast ferry to Bangar, a small town in the district of Temburong.  Temburong is known for it renowned Ulu National Park.  We will be staying in Bangar and explore some options to go to Ulu.

When we got off the ferry we met Derek, a South African teacher working in Bangar.  He interrogated us about our presence in Bangar as it is not common for tourists to arrive in this area unless they come on an organized tour.  After talking to him for a while he offered some help so we could explore the surrounding area.  We exchanged phone numbers and he left.

In the afternoon we received a text from Arlene, an Irish teacher also working in Bangar.  She told us she was going bird watching the next day and she could take us along… of course we could not let this opportunity go by, we said thank you and agreed to be ready at 7:00am for pick up.

Arlene came to pick us up at 7:15am on September 17, we drove to Bukit Patoi, a forest reserve.  Here we went for a walk and we were lucky to see a rare silver monkey, lots of different birds, and even a snake.  Arlene taught us a lot about the birds in the area.  We then went for lunch and met with Derek, who drove us back to the hotel.  We were very grateful to have met Derek and Arlene because they made possible our visit to one of the most untouched forests in the world, otherwise we would not have been able to explore this area as there is not public transport and going to one of the resorts close to Ulu National Park is very expensive for us.

We are now saying goodbye to Brunei, a country with a funny feeling… we honestly cannot describe how it feels to be here.  People are nice but it is too quiet and it has many rules due to its Islamic culture.
