Llegamos a las 11:30pm anoche a Bandar Seri
Begawan, también conocido como BSB. Nuestro anfitrión de couchsurfing, Muru, nos
recogió en el aeropuerto.
Después de una buena noche fuimos al centro de
la ciudad para conocer. El centro de la ciudad está a pocas cuadras, y es muy
pequeño, hay algunos edificios administrativos, un mercado, una mezquita,
algunos restaurantes y eso es todo. Este lugar es sorprendentemente tranquilo;
después de venir de otros países del sudeste asiático llegamos a un lugar donde
el tráfico es organizado, no hay
tacos, nadie usa el pito, no hay basura en las calles, los parques están bien
cuidados, no hay motos, tuk-tuks o triciclos, el transporte público es escaso y no hay nadie en la calle... ¡este tiene que ser un mundo diferente! Si no fuera
por el clima y la vegetación tropical, diría que aterrizamos en Marte.
Visitamos la mezquita Omar Ali Saifuddien dan
Bahtera Mahligai, pero lamentablemente no pudimos entrar porque estaban en unas
oraciones especiales. Luego fuimos al Centro de Turismo, donde no pudimos
encontrar a nadie que nos ayudara y tuvimos que esperar más de una hora,
aparentemente es normal que las personas desaparezcan de su lugar de trabajo
por largos periodos de tiempo por motivos personales.
Por la tarde caminamos un poco más y visitamos el parque Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien, donde Brunei proclamó la independencia
del Reino Unido el 1 de enero de 1984. Luego fuimos al Museo Royal Regalia,
donde muestran todos los regalos que mandatarios de todo el mundo le han dado
al rey. Luego visitamos el templo chino.
Por la noche, nuestro anfitrión nos llevó por la
ciudad y visitamos la mezquita Jame Asr Hassanil Bolkiah, la entrada al Palacio
del Rey y finalmente la mezquita Omar Ali Saifuddien dan Bahtera Mahligai. Las
mezquitas se ven hermosas por la noche con toda la iluminación.
El 14 de septiembre salimos a primera hora en un
recorrido en bote por los manglares para ver los micos narigones. En el camino
vimos nutrias que aparentemente son muy difíciles de ver por aquí. Después de
un corto paseo en bote, bueno... corto porque la velocidad de estos barcos es
muy impresionante (80HP para un barco de madera y aerodinámico), llegamos a los
manglares y poco después encontramos los micos. Están en lo alto de los árboles
desayunando. ¡Es hermoso ver a un animal tan único!
El bote nos llevó a el pueblo sobre el agua y
nos mostró algunos lugares interesantes, como las muchas escuelas que tienen,
algunas de las mezquitas y la estación de bomberos. Nos dejó allí para que
pudiéramos caminar e investigar un poco. Caminamos por los puentes de madera
del pueblo durante más de una hora. Los hallazgos arqueológicos demuestran que
la aldea Kampong Ayer ha existido por más de mil años. La mayoría de las casas
están hechas de madera, sin embargo, hay un barrio muy moderno que esta recién
construido, donde las casas están hechas con materiales de la más alta calidad.
A las 9:00 a.m. fuimos a la Galería Cultural y
Turística de Kampong Ayer donde aprendimos más sobre el pueblo Kampong Ayer y
el desarrollo económico y social desde el siglo X hasta hoy, y un poco de
historia de la cultura islámica.
Por la tarde nos encontramos con Rosey, otra
couchsurfer que no nos pudo hospedar, pero que quería que nos encontráramos
para comer. Nos llevó y nos mostró algunos lugares más alrededor de Brunei. El
día terminó en el mercado nocturno local. Aquí las personas son extremadamente
amigables y habladoras; todos querían saber de dónde era y cuándo llegamos. Fui
a tomar fotos de toda la comida y les encantó!
El 15 de septiembre fuimos al centro de la
ciudad otra vez, pero esta vez pasamos el día trabajando en el blog y otras
cosas que necesitábamos hacer. Por la noche Rosey nos recogió y nos llevó al Hotel Empire, el único hotel cinco estrellas en Brunei. Se dice que este hotel
fue construido como un palacio para el rey, sin embargo, el rey decidió no vivir en
él, por lo que se convirtió en un hotel. El lujo de este lugar está fuera de
este mundo, las lámparas, el piso de mármol, la piscina, todo es
impresionante! También es increíble que sin ser huéspedes nos permitiera
caminar, tomar fotos y quedarnos para ver el atardecer en la playa… ¡eso es
increíble! Nadie nos pregunto nada e incluso nos abrieron la puerta de entrada.

We arrived at 11:30pm last night in Bandar Seri
Begawan, also known as BSB. Our
couchsurfing host Muru came to pick us up at the airport.
After a good night of sleep we headed to the
city centre to explore around. The
city centre is just a few blocks, there are a few administrative buildings, a
market, a mosque, a few restaurants and that’s about it. This place is shockingly quiet; after
coming from the other countries in Southeast Asia we arrived in a place where
the traffic is organised, there are no traffic jams, nobody uses the horn of
their cars, there is no garbage on the streets, the parks are well maintained,
there are no motorcycles, tuk-tuks or tricycles, public transportation is
scarce, and there is nobody on the streets… this have to be a different
world! If it wasn’t for the hot
weather and tropical vegetation I would say we landed in Mars.
We visited the Mosque Omar Ali Saifuddien dan
Bahtera Mahligai but unfortunately we could not go in due to a special
praying. We then went to the
Visitor Centre, where we could not find anybody to help us out for more than an
hour, apparently it is normal that people disappear from their workplace for
long periods of time for personal reasons.
In the afternoon we walked a bit more and
visited the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien, where Brunei proclaimed
independence from the United Kingdom on January 1st, 1984. We then headed to the Royal Regalia
Museum, where they display all the gifts mandataries from all over the world
have given to the King. We then
visited the Chinese temple.
In the evening, our host drove us around the
city and we visited Jame Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque , the entrance to the King’s Palace and finally Mosque
Omar Ali Saifuddien dan Bahtera Mahligai by night. The mosques look really nice at night with all the lighting.
On September 14 we left early in the morning on
a boat tour around the mangroves to see the proboscis monkeys. On the way we saw otters which
apparently are very difficult to spot around here. After a short boat ride, well… short because the speed of
these boats is very impressive (80HP for a wooden and aerodynamic boat), we
arrived at the mangroves and shortly after we found the proboscis monkeys. They are high up in the trees having
their breakfast. It was beautiful
to see such unique animal!
The boat man then took us to the water village
and showed us a few interesting places like the many schools they have, some of
the mosques and the fire station just to name a few. He dropped us off here as per our request so we can walk
around and investigate a little bit more.
We walked along the wooden bridges of the water village for over an
hour. Archaeological findings
prove that Kampong Ayer water village has existed for more than a thousand
years. Most houses are made of
basic wooden materials, however a very modern neighbourhood was just built
where the houses are made with the highest quality materials.
At 9:00am we headed to Kampong Ayer Cultural and
Tourism Gallery where we learned more about the Kampong Ayer water village from
the 10th century until today’s economical and social development
including the Islamic culture.
In the evening we met Rosey, another couchsurfer
that could not host us but wanted to meet us for dinner. She took us around and showed us a few
more places around Brunei. The day
ended at the local night market; here people were extremely friendly and
talkative; everyone wanted to know where I was from and when we had
arrived. I went around taking
pictures of all the food and they loved it!

Elegantes construcciones. Otra cultura. Y esos nombres tan largos de los lugares, no se como hacen ustedes para recordarlos y aun mas para pronunciarlos. Todo un trabalenguas.
