Febrero 24 - 26 / February 24 - 26

Vamos rumbo al Uluru o la Roca Ayer’s, en todo el centro de Australia.  Pero antes hay que manejar y manejar!

El 24 de Febrero manejamos desde Milla Milla a Hughenden.  Paramos en varios lugares solamente a tanquear.  El unico lugar interesante fue Ravenshoe, donde habia un señor tocando guitarra y me fui a hablar con el y toco una cancion muy bonita.

Una señora en un puesto de informacion nos sugirio tomar la Autopista Savannah que nos lleva al Uluru; pero antes de llegar a la interseccion The Lindt nos encontramos a un empleado gubernamental que coincidencialmente trabaja en las vias y nos dijo que debido al cyclon que habia habido en el Golfo de Carpentaria las vias estaban cerradas y no habia paso en algunas secciones, nos recomendo tomar otra ruta.  Ahora vamos a tomar la Autopista A6.  En la interseccion The Lindt tuvimos dos opciones, la ruta larga (Autopista 63 hacia Charters Towers y luego A6 hacia Hughenden) o la ruta corte (Autopista 62 hacia Hughenden).  En la bomba de gasolina la señora nos dijo que la via no tenia inundaciones.  La autopista 62 se llama Ruta en Desarrollo Kennedy (mucho ojo con la palabra “Desarrollo”)… es una via “hibrida” y con “hibrida” me refiero a que hay partes pavimentadas y partes destapadas.  Manejamos 270Km y solo nos encontramos 5 carros, 3 en el sentido contrario y 2 en la misma direccion de nosotros.  No creo que ganamos mucho tomando esta via porque no podiamos manejar muy rapido en las partes destapadas.  Tambien habia que tener cuidado con vacas y toros porque las fincas en esta zona no tienen linderos y siempre nos encontramos varios toros en la via… bastante miedoso!  Tambien nos encontramos un par de canguros en la via.

Nos demoramos como 3.5 horas para recorrer los 270Km pero llegamos a Hughenden sanos y salvos.

El 25 de Febrero manejamos desde Hughenden hasta Camooweal.  Paramos en cada pueblo que nos encontramos en el camino a tanquear… bueno, solo hay unos cuantos, Richmond, Julia Creek, Cloncurry, Mount Isa y Camooweal.  Todo esto en un recorrido de 711Km, pore so habia que parar en cada uno y llenar el tanque!

El mas emocionante es Mount Isa que tiene una mina de plata-plomo a cielo abierto.

Llegamos a Camooweal antes del atardecer pues nosh an recomendado no manejar de noche porque se pueden atravezar canguros, cerdos salvajes, toros o vacas.  Por la noche fuimos al bar del pueblo a tomarnos una cerveza.  En el pueblo viven solamente 187 personas y habian unas 50 en el bar… bueno, era Sabado.  Nos fuimos antes de que se pusiera pesado el ambiente, ya habian varios borrachos!


El 26 de Febrero fue mas de lo mismo.  Manejamos 960Km de Camooweal a Alice Springs.  Paramos a almorazar en una formacion rocosa que se llama Devil’s Marbles, donde hay unas piedras que no se explican todavia como llegaron a parar ahi en los lugares donde estan.  Salimos a las 7:30am y llegamos a Alice Springs a las 6:15pm.  Esta vez tambien paramos en casi todos los pueblos a tanquear… creo que solo se nos paso uno!

We are heading to the Uluru or Ayer’s Rock, right in the centre of Australia.

On February 24 we drove from Millaa Millaa to Hughenden.  We stopped at several places to fill up only.  The only interesting place was Ravenshoe, where I heard a guy playing guitar and I went to talk to him and he played a very nice song.

We had chosen one of the suggestions from a lady in the information centre.  We were going to take the Savannah Highway which will take us to the Uluru; however we stopped just before The Lindt Juntion and talked to a Queensland Government road services employee (just the person we needed) and he told us that due to the latest cyclon in the Gulf of Carpentaria the road was flooded and it was best for us to take a different route.  We are now heading towards Highway A6.  At The Lindt Junction we had two options, the long route (Highway 63 to Charters Towers and then A6 to Hughenden) or the shortcut (Highway 62 to Hughenden).  We asked the lady at the petrol station and she said that they shortcut was a good option and it was not flooded so we opted for that option.  The shortcut, Highway 62 is also called Kennedy Developmental Road (pay attention to the “Developmental” part of it)… this is a “hybrid” road and by “hybrid” I mean that there are sealed or paved sections as well as unsealed, gravel or unpaved sections.  We drove for 270Km on this road and came across to just 5 cars, 3 in the opposite direction and 2 in the same direction as us.  We did not gain too much ground today as the speed on the unsealed, gravel, unpaved sections was much slower.  We also had to be very careful as the farms are not fenced so we encounter several 400Kg bulls wandering in the middle of the road… that was scary!  There was also the odd wallaby on the side of the road.

It took us over 3.5 hours to drive this stretch of highway but fortunately enough we arrived in Hughenden safely.

On February 25 we drove from Hughenden to Camooweal.  We stopped in every single town we found along the road to fill up… well, there are only a hand full of them, Richmond, Julia Creek, Cloncurry, Mount Isa and Camooweal.  All this in a span of 711Km, this is why we stopped in every single one of them to fill up!

The only one exciting was Mount Isa which has an open pit silver-lead mine.

We arrived at Camooweal just before sunset as there is a recommendation not to drive at night due to the high risk of hitting a kangaroo, wild pig, bulls or cows.  We went to the local pub for a couple of beers.  There is only 187 people living in Camooweal and there were around 50 people at the pub… well, it was Saturday night.  We left before it got too crazy though!


February 26 was much more of the same.  We drove 960Km from Camooweal to Alice Springs. We stopped for lunch at Devil’s Marbles, a rock formation in the middle of the desert.  It is unexplainable how these rocks ended up where they are.  We left at 7:30am and arrived at 6:15pm in Alice Springs.  Again, we stopped at almost every town to fill up… I think we missed only one!

  1. Excelentes fotos y hermosos paisajes. Y en esos largos recorridos como se manejo la copiloto?? si estuvo despierta o se durmió todo el trayecto? y otra preguntica si uno se sienta en el baño y a una de esas ranitas le da por meterse por ciertos lugares que se hace?? jajaja
