Our backpacking trip: Enero 10 - 11 / January 10

El 10 de Enero estuvimos en el muelle de los pelicanos, un lugar donde muchos pelicanos llegan y se sientan sobre un muelle viejo.

En la mañana del 11 de Enero fuimos al mirador Gan Gan, de donde se ven las diferentes bahias y pueblos de la zona.

Luego fuimos a la Bahia Nelson al centro de informacion a averiguar que habia para hacer en la zona. Nos dieron varias opciones pero nos decidimos por unas de ellas.

Salimos de la Bahia Nelson y llegamos a la Bahia Anna a hacer sandboarding. Llegamos a la duna de arena mas grande en el hemisferio sur (bueno, eso fue lo que nos dijeron!), es una duna de arena de 32Km de largo. Nos llevaron en un camion a la cima de la duna, nos dieron algunas instrucciones de como usar la tabla y nos empezamos a tirar. Pasamos super bueno! Fue corto porque estaba haciendo mucho calor, la temperatura estaba alrededor de los 36C y caminando cima arriba despues de cada tirada se empieza a sentir el effecto del calor. Al cabo de una hora regresamos en el mismo camion que nos llevo… que juguete tan bacano!

Despues decidimos testiar nuestra camioneta 4X4 en la arena, asi que nos fuimos para la Playa Samurai. Todo iba super bien y ya casi ibamos a llegar pero de repente la arena se puso muy suave y le levante el pie del acelerador un poquito y el carro se enterro en la arena… lo unico que podia escuchar era la voz de Hernan diciendome, no lo deje apagar!; lo que siempre me decia cuando ibamos a montar en los ATV en Canada. Bueno, no escuche lo que me decia y nos quedamos enterrados en la arena en la mitad de la nada. Trate de sacarlo un par de veces pero empeore la cosa. Empezamos a cavar con las manos a ver si podiamos salir pero nada, el carro estaba realmente enterrado. Varias camionetas grandes pasaron pero nadie paraba a rescatarnos. Despues de unos 10 minutos un señor paro pero me dijo que no tenia nada con que sacarme y que me recomendaba que si salia me devolviera porque se ponia peor. Mas tarde un par de muchachos que iban en una Toyota Land Cruiser pararon y nos preguntaron que si necesitabamos que nos sacaran… les dijimos que si, por favor! Ellos tenian todo el equipo de rescate asi que empezamos a tratar de sacer el carro del hueco donde lo habiamos metido. Despues de varios intentos y de bajarle la presion a las llantas a 12psi pudimos salir. Al contrario de lo que habia recomendado el señor, maneje hasta la playa sin nungun problema pero decidimos devolvernos inmediatamente por si depronto necesitabamos que nos sacaran otra vez. Regresamos sin ningun problema peero aprendimos unas cuantas lecciones.

Despues de la aventura de la tarde ya no queriamos saber mas del carro, lo parqueamos en el camping donde nos ibamos a quedar y nos fuimos para la playa. El atardecer estuvo espectacular… vean las fotos!

On January 10 we went to Pelican Wharf an area where lots of pelicans come over and sit on an old warf.

In the morning of January 11 we went to Gan Gan Lookout, where we had a great view of different bays and towns around the area.

Later we went to Nelson Bay to the Information Centre to find out what we could do around the area. They gave us a lot of options, however we have decided on a couple of them.

We left Nelson Bay and went to Anna Bay to do sandboarding. We arrived at the largest sand dune in the southern hemisphere (well, that’s what they say!), it is a 32Km long sand dune. They took us in a very nice truck to the top of the sand dune, gave us some instructions on how to use the board and off we went down the hill. It was so much fun! We really enjoyed our short time there but it was too hot, around 36C, and walking up the hill in such heat was not safe. After an hour we came back through the sand dune in the same truck… what a toy!

We then decided to test our 4WD on sand, so we went to Samurai Beach. Everything was going really well until the sand got soft and I lifted the foot of the accelerator and the car sank in the sand… I could hear in my mind my friend Hernan’s voice telling me floor it, don’t let it stall!; which is what he used to tell me when we rode ATV in Canada. Well, I did not listen to him and there we were in the middle of nowhere stuck in soft sand. I tried a couple of times but just made it worst. We started digging with our hands but did not make too much difference, the car was really stuck. A few big trucks drove by but nobody stopped. A guy stopped after around 10 minutes but told me he did not have anything to pull me out with, so no help. Later a couple of young guys with a big Toyota Land Cruiser stopped and asked us if we needed a pull… we said yes, please! They had all the gear so we started trying to get the car out of the big hole we dug ourselves into. After several attempts and lowering the tire pressure to barely 12psi we got out. I drove the car to the beach but decided to go back just in case we go stuck in our way out and needed to be rescued again. We made it back okay without any issues but we learned a few lessons.

After the adventurous afternoon we had enough of car activities so we parked it in the campground we are staying at and headed down to the beach to relax. We witness a beautiful sunset with very dramatic skies… take a look at the pictures!
