En la mañana estuvimos en
Glenorchy, un pueblo pequeño a 30 minutos de Queenstown. La manejada desde Queenstown a
Glenorchy es una de las mas bonitas que hemos hecho. Las montañas con las cumbres todavia con nieve, el lago y
los bosques todavia virgenes hacen de esta region un paisaje hermoso.
Luego fuimos a Wanaka, donde
tuvimos una tarde llena de adrenalina.
Habiamos reservado con Skydive Wanaka para tirarnos en paracaidas. A eso de las 1:30pm llegamos al
aeropuerto de Wanaka donde esta la cede de Skydive Wanaka; alli vimos el video
de seguridad, firmamos todos los papeles necesarios y nos dieron la
indumentaria necesaria para saltar.
A la hora de montarnos al avion aparecen nuestros instructores, una
manada de locos que se ganan la vida saltando de un avion amarrados a un
extraño, bueno… nosotros estamos tambien amarrados a un extraño!
La avioneta es pequeña, de
color rojo, abordamos por la unica puerta que tiene y despega sin ningun
problema. A medida que sube se
mueve mas y mas, pero la vista desde alla arriba le hace quitar a uno el susto…
bueno, lo otro es que si se va a caer ya tenemos los paracaidas asi que hay una
buena posibilidad de sobrevivir!
La avioneta se mueve cada vez mas y mas, el instructor aprieta las tiras
de seguridad, nos pone las gafas, el gorro y se abre la puerta.
El fotografo que va a tomar
las fotos y a hacer el video sale de primero, se cuelga de una barra en la
parte superior de la avioneta y empieza a filmar y a tomar fotos de todo el
proceso. Estoy sentado sintiendo
como el viento entra a la avioneta cuando veo que estan poniendo en posicion a
Agustin, que con sus pies trata de frenar el instructor. De un momento a otro el fotografo, el
instructor y Agustin se lanzan al vacio y desaparecen de mi vista en cuestion
de milisegundos.
Es mi turno, Giovanna la
fotografa se cuelga de la barra fuera de la avioneta y esta lista para empezar
a hacer el video y tomar fotos; el instructor me empieza a poner en position,
mis piernas cuelgan de la avioneta y cuando menos pienso estoy en el aire en
caida libre por 45 segundos… en un momento Giovanna se despide de mi y
desaparece como por arte de magia cuando mi instructor abre el paracaidas y
ella sigue en caida libre. El
descenso continua por 6 o 7 minutos mas, ahi se disfruta la vista y se habla
con el instructor. El aterrizaje
fue realmente sencillo, hice lo que me dijo y todo salio bien.
La sensacion es
indescriptible, se esta confiando la vida en un extraño, una persona a la que
vi por primera vez y a la cual depronto no volvere a ver; pero su vida tambien
esta en peligro asi que me tranquilizo… jajajaja! La caida libre excelente, cuando se abre el paracaidas se
siente un tiron fuerte en el cuerpo por el sistema que lo sostiene a uno
amarrado al instructor, pero la vista… si la vista de este lugar hace que esta
experiencia sea lo máximo!

In the morning we went to
Gleorchy, a small town around 30 minutes from Queenstown. The drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy
is one of the most beautiful ones we have done. The mountains still with snow covered tops, the lake and the
forests paint a beautiful landscape.
We then drove to Wanaka,
where we had an afternoon packed with adrenaline. We had made reservations with Skydive Wanaka to do
skydiving. Around 1:30pm we
arrived at Wanaka sirport where Skydive Wanaka is located; after watching the
safety video and signing all the paper work, we got all the necessary gear to
jump. When it was about time to
get on the plane we met our instructors, a whole bunch of crazy guys that make
their living jumping out of planes attached to a stranger, well… we were also
attached to a stranger!
The airplane is small, red
in color. We boarded through the
only door it has and took off without major issues. When it starts going up it starts shaking more and more,
however the view is beautiful so you don’t feel scare… well, the other thing is
that if it were to go down we already have a parachute so there are better
chances of survival! The airplane
moves more and more, the instructor tightens the safety harness, give us the
glasses, the hat and the door opens.
The photographer who is
taking the pictures and making the video gets out of the plane first, he hangs
from a bar in the top part of the plane and starts recording and taking
pictures. I am sitting down
feeling how the air gets into the airplane when I see they are preparing
Agustin to jump, who presses his feet against the floor to impede the
instructor from moving. All of a
sudden, the photographer, the instructor and Agustin jump of the plane and
disappear in a matter of miliseconds.
It is my turn, Giovanna the
photographer gets out of the plane and she is hanging from the bar outside and
starts recording the video and taking photos; the instructor starts taking me
into position, my legs are hanging from the airplane and when I least expected
I am in the air free falling for around 45 seconds… suddenly Giovanna says
goodbye and disappears once the instructor pull out the parachute and she
continues free falling. We keep
going down for around 6 or 7 minutes, enjoying the view and taking to the
instructor. Landing was great, I
did everything he told me to do and it was smooth.
It is an incredible feeling,
you are putting your life on a stranger’s hands, someone you just met and
probably will not see again; however his life is in as much danger as mine so I
am relax… hahahaha! Free falling
is great, when the parachute opens you feel a strong upwards pull, however the
view… yes the view is what make this experience awesome!
