Anoche llegamos a
Warrnambool en camino a Adelaide pero despues de pensarlo mucho decidimos
devolvernos hacia Sydney para la celebracion de Año Nuevo y presenciar unos de
los mas populares juegos pirotecnicos en el mundo.
Vamos a manejar todo el dia
para llegar lo mas cerca de Canberra, la capital Australiana, para pasar alla
varias horas mañana. Encontramos
un camping gratis, si como lo oyen GRATIS! Es en la parte de atras del Hotel Beehive en Coolac. Los dueños son super generosos y dejan
acampar gratis. Cuando llegamos
nos mostraron las instalaciones (baño y ducha) pero sin esperar nada a cambio…
queda muy poquita gente en el mundo como ellos! Compramos unas cervezas en el restaurante incluso despues de
que habian cerrado.
El 29 de Diciembre llegamos
a Canberra. Estuvimos visitando el
museo y el parlamento. Tambien
fuimos al mirador Monte Ainslie donde se ve el diseño de la ciudad.
Canberra es una ciudad poco
usual en Australia; fue diseñada, planeada y construida para acabar con la
rivalidad entre Melbourne y Sydney por se la capital. En 1908 seleccionaron el sitio para construir la nueva
capital, en 1911 un diseño de Walter Burley Griffin y Marion Mahony Griffin de
Chicago fue escogido entre una comperencia internacional y en 1913 Walter
Griffin fue seleccionado como el Director de Diseño y Construccion de la
Capital Federal y la construccion comenzo.
En la noche empezamos a
manejar hacia Sydney. Dormimos en
otro camping gratis llamado El Gran Hueco cerca a Braidwood, sin embargo este
es manejado por el gobierno provincial y es muy basico… solo una letrina!
El 30 de Diciembre
continuamos hacia Sydney, paramos en la Bahia de Jervis y en el hoyo soplador
de Kiama (el cual no soplo mientras estuvimos ahi… pero no es la primera vez
que esto pasa, parece que no tenemos suerte con los hoyos sopladores!). La Bahia de Jervis el muy bonita llena
de playas de arena blanca (la playa Hyams fue reconocida por el libro de los
Guinness Records como la arena mas blanca del mundo).
En la noche llegamos a la
casa de Vanesa, Olie y Angie.
Vanesa es una amiga colombiana de Marce y como ella esta de viaje con
Olie nos presto su cuarto. En la
casa nos recibio Angie y su mama Nancy que esta de visita.

Last night we made it to
Warrnambool on our way to Adelaide but after a lot of debate we have decided to
turn around and head over to Sydney for New Year’s Eve and see one of the most
popular fireworks in the world.
We are driving all day to
get as close as possible to Canberra, Australia’s Capital, so we can spend some
time there tomorrow. We found a
free campground, yes you heard it right FREE! It is at the back of the Beehive Hotel in Coolac. The owners are very kind people who let
stay campers for free. When we
arrived they gave us a run down of the facilities (toilets and shower) but did
not expect anything on return… very few people left in the world like
them! We bought a couple of beers
at the restaurant even after they close.
On December 29, we arrived
in Canberra around mid morning. We
spent the day visiting the museum and the parliament house. We also went for a drive to Mount Ainslie
Lookout where we had a nice view of the city.
Canberra is an unusual
Australian city; it was designed, planned and built as a compromise between
Melbourne and Sydney of becoming capital city. In 1908 a site was selected to build Australia’s new capital
city, in 1911 a design by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin from
Chicago was chosen from an international design competition and in 1913 Walter
Griffin was appointed Federal Capital Director of Design and Construction of
the new city started.
In the evening we started
driving towards Sydney. We spent
the night in The Big Hole, another free campground close to Braidwood, however
this is managed by the provincial government and it is basic… just a long drop
toilet.
On December 30 we continue driving
towards Sydney, stopping at Jervis Bay and Kiama’s blowhole (which did not blow
while we were there… not the first time this happens to us, we do not seem to
have too much luck with blowholes!).
Jervis Bay is a beautiful place full of white sandy beaches (Hyams beach
is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records to be the whitest in the world).
In the evening we arrived at
Vanesa, Olie and Angie’s house.
Vanesa is Marcela’s friend from Colombia but since she is away traveling
with Olie she offered us her room.
Angie and her mom Nancy greeted us. Nancy is visiting from Colombia.
