Diciembre 31 - Enero 5 / December 31 - January 5

Well, it is the last day of the year and we are in Sydney to celebrate the arrival of 2017; however that means that the day starts really early.  The alarm went off at 5:00am so I can take a shower and go to Blues Point Reserve to take care of the spot to see the fireworks.

We had not mentioned that in Angie’s house there was also one of her Colombian friends, Angi with her father Pedro also in Sydney for New Year’s celebration.  They had all gone to Blues Point Reserve on December 30 to set up a tent to reserve a front row place to see the fireworks.  Ian, a philipino guy with his family, was going to sleep there and will keep an eye on Angi’s tent, we hope to see it in the morning.

Pedro and I left just before 6:00am and got to Blues Point Reserve, the tent was there and Ian was there vigilant of our spot… what a kind guy!  We said hello and asked him if he had a good night and he told us that it was hot but slept well.

Around noon, Angie, Nancy, Angi and Marcela arrived on site.  Mother Nature was kind enough to give us a cloudy day so it was not too hot, this was a bonus because according to Angie a couple of years ago it was around 40C and it was unbearable.

In the afternoon; Sabrina, Angie’s friend, and her mom Antonella arrived.  We spent the afternoon taking naps, taking and playing Rummy Q and ONE.  You don’t realized how fast you waste a full day doing nothing, just waiting for something to happen.

We also watched the place getting full and full.  When we arrived at 6:20am there was a lot of space available, however as the time went by more and more people arrived and by 4:00pm there was hardly a square inch of grass visible.  Going to the toilets was a mission, as you had to jump over people and try not to disturb them much.  There was also the occasional opportunistic trying to get in from of us by sitting right on the edge, unfortunately for them we were not shy to tell them off!

The night arrived and the expectations built up… there were fireworks at 9:00pm for those with small kids that need to go to bed early so there was a display of what was about to happen.

The wait was over, the countdown started and the crowd got excited.  Sure enough as the countdown reached 10 people got loud and counted down the final 10 seconds of 2016 and with the first explosions of the fireworks all we could hear was WOW!  The energy built up over time, the display of technology and the coordination of such a beautiful fireworks is far from any other one we had seen before… my jaw dropped was all I can remember!  In just over 10 minutes the show is over and people head home with a big smile on their faces… they have just witnessed one of the biggest New Year’s celebration on the planet!

On January 1, we walked around the city, went to see the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, The Rocks which is the oldest town in Sydney, and Darling Harbour.

On January 2, Angie the best city guide in town, took us for a walk around the CBD.  We saw many places, thanks Angie for taking us around.

On January 3, we went to Coogee beach and walked along the coastal track to Bondi Beach, the most famous beach in Sydney.  At Bondi Beach Angie picked us up with Nancy and Anton, the kid she babysits.  Anton is adorable, he does not mind going around the city, walking long distances, going to the shopping mall, etc.

On January 4, Angie took us to the botanical gardens and we rode the train with Anton who was very excited about it.  In the afternoon we went to the Harbour Bridge and walked across.

On January 5, we said hello to Vanessa and her family and goodbye to everybody before continuing our journey along the coast.  Again thank you for everybody’s hospitality and to the best tour girl in Sydney… Angie!

We found a free campground on our way to our next destination.
