We arrived in Melbourne on Sunday
December 18, my friend Oscar from Colombia who’s been living in Australia for
many years came to pick us up at the airport. We are staying at his place is Truganina, a neighborhood in
the outskirts of Melbourne.
On Monday December 19 we
woke up early to go to the bank so we can get our bank account activated so we
can transfer money from New Zealand.
We also spent time at Vodafone getting a SIM card so we can be connected
to the digital world.
The next few days we spent
them going around from one end of the city to the other, literally; looking for
a car. The public transport in
Melbourne is amazing, however everywhere you want to go it takes around 2
hours. We certainly had forgotten
how time consuming it is to move around in big cities.
After a couple of days of
looking at multiple vehicles and test driving many of them we finally settle
for a Nissan X-Trail. We are sure
we can make it work into a comfortable sleep-in car.
We got the car on Thursday
December 22 afternoon, drove to Bunnings (sort of Home Depot) to get the
materials required to build the bed.
We had a design in mind and got most of the wood cut there.
We spent all Friday
assembling the bed and making a few changes to the original design to make sure
it was easy to use. We finished
the construction on Saturday morning and decided that the inflatable mattress
we had was not going to give us enough head space so we bought a foam mattress. We also went to buy the propane tank
and stove, chairs and a few other things we needed.
We spent Chirstmas with
Oscar and his family. Thank you so
much for their hospitality and letting us stay that long, it was supposed to be
just a couple of days but getting the car was harder than we imagined.
On Sunday December 25 we
left on our road trip around Australia.
The first stop will be the Twelve Apostles.
