Dia 277 / Day 277 - April 5/2013

Today we walked around another area in Amritsar.

In the evening we went back to the temple.  We visited the sleeping areas where pilgrims from all over India that come to visit the temple stay.  We also went to see the kitchen where volunteers cook every meal.  Finally we saw how volunteers wash the dishes and arrange everything to maintain the flow of people through the dining rooms.  There, we met an Indian guy that explained the whole process to us; he comes from far away to volunteer here for at least 3 or 4 days every time he can.

We were really impressed with the way this temple feed so many people every day.

  2. Hi Carlos and Marcela
Glad u had a "good" time in India - I never knew that India had so much to offer (including scams) and am happy to see it all through your eyes. Despite all your troubles, I am pleased to note that at no time the two of you faced any threat of personal violence, which seems to worry many tourists while travelling through third world countries. Of course, the two of you are experienced travellers and that would have helped.
The two guys in sarees are what we call "hijras" or eunuchs; most are congenitally deformed, some are forcibly castrated and used as male sex workers. During daytime, they earn money by begging. People give them money mainly because they can become abusive if refused; however, they claim some "divine status" also.
