Our backpacking trip: Junio 23 - 26 / June 23

Nuestro próximo destino es Houay Xay, una pequeña ciudad al borde del río Mekong en la frontera con Tailandia. Hemos elegido tomar un barco lento para llegar a esta ciudad en vez de ir en bus.

El 23 de Junio nos recogieron a las 7:30 am y nos llevaron al muelle a las afueras de Luang Prabang. A las 8:45 am empezamos el recorrido río arriba.. es un barco muy lento y en algunos lugares tiene que luchar contra las corrientes entonces parece como que no se moviera. El paisaje es muy bonito; hay algunas formaciones rocosas a lo largo del Mekong. Llegamos a Pak Beng, medio camino, a las 7:00 pm. Vamos a dormir en Bounmee Guesthouse esta noche y continuaremos mañana.

El 24 de Junio continuamos nuestro viaje por el río Mekong. De nuevo a las 8:00 am salimos del muelle. El barco se detiene en el camino para recoger y dejar a la gente local que utilizan el barco como su único sistema de transporte. Alrededor del mediodía nos toco una tormenta con mucha lluvia y viento, afortunadamente no duró mucho tiempo. Llegamos a Houay Xay 6:00 pm, otro largo día a lo largo del río Mekong.

El 25 de Junio visitamos Wat Chom Khao Manilath, el templo principal de la ciudad y el monasterio. Pasamos el resto de la tarde trabajando en el blog.

El 26 de Junio nos despertamos muy temprano para ver el "Alms Giving", similar a la tradición en Luang Prabang, los monjes bajan del monasterio a recoger la comida para el día. Las mujeres se arrodillan en el lado de las calles y le dan arroz a los monjes. El resto del día lo pasamos en el hotel trabajándole al blog.

Our next destination is Houay Xay, a small town along the Mekong River right on the border with Thailand. We have chosen to take a slow boat to reach this town instead of taking a bus.

On June 23 we got picked up at 7:30am and dropped us off at the slow boat pier outside Luang Prabang. We left at 8:45am and up the river we went… it is a very slow boat and in some places it has to battle strong currents so it feels like it is not moving at all. The scenery is nice; there are very nice rock formations along the Mekong. We reached Pak Beng at 7:00pm, which is approximately half way. We will be sleeping at Bounmee Guesthouse tonight and will continue tomorrow.

On June 24 we continued our journey up the Mekong River. Again at 8:00am we left the pier. The boat stops along the way to pick up and drop off local people that use the boat as their only transportation system to reach their villages. At around noon we got into a storm with heavy rain and wind, fortunately it did not last too long. We arrived at Houay Xay 6:00pm, another long day along the Mekong River.

On June 25 we visited Wat Chom Khao Manilath, the main temple in town and monastery in town. We spent the rest of the afternoon working on the blog.

On June 26 we woke up very early in the morning to see the “Alms Giving”, similar tradition like in Luang Prabang, the monks come down the monastery gathering the food for the day. The ladies kneel down on the side of the streets and provide rice to the monks. The rest of the day was more catching up with our blog.
