Dia 213 / Day 213 - January 31/2013

Today we woke up early and went to the train station.  We took the 9:45am train from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya, a city in hill country.  It took us 6 hours to get there because it is a slow train but through a beautiful landscape.  The train passes through tea plantations and virgin jungles.  In every station and along the ride people come to the train tracks to say goodbye to the people on the train, especially tourists that travel in the observation wagon, the last wagon of the train with big windows to see the landscape.  The kids come to the tracks to wave to the train and you can see they get really excited when we waved back at them!

We arrived at King’s Fern hotel.

In the evening we went walking around town and the locals showed us how they chew tobacco; it is called betel-quid or paan; a horrible mix of betel leaf, areca nut and slaked lime, and tobacco.  They put this in their mouth and chew it, it produces a narcotic effect and the mouth becomes orange.  Generally, the older people that had done it for a while do not have many teeth left.

Dia 211 / Day 211 - January 29/2013

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today we slept in.  We made our bags and selected some cloths we are leaving behind.

In the afternoon we went for a walk along the path near Anupama’s house and brought the cloths and some food to the old man we met a few days ago.  We walked along the narrow path going into his shack and as soon as he noticed our presence he came to greet us with a smile on his face.  He invited us to sit on a couple of plastic chairs while he took his place on his bed almost falling because of his fragile body.  With his broken English he asked us about us and we talked for a little bit.

In the evening we said goodbye to Anupama because she is going back to Calgary.

Dia 209 / Day 209 - January 27/2013

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today we woke up early in the morning and went to visit Hindu and Buddhist temples in the area.  First of all we went to Nallur Kandaswamy, a Hindu temple located in Jaffna, unfortunately it was too early and it was still closed so we looked at it only on the outside.

Later we drove for a couple of hours from Jaffna passing the Palk straight to get to Kayts Island, then we crossed to Punkudutivu Island; finally we got a boat ride to get to Nainativu Island, where we visited Naga Pooshani Amman, a Hindu temple and Nagadipa Purana Vihara, a Buddhist temple.

After lunch we started our drive to Anuradhapura.  Along the road we stopped to visit some of the monuments that have been built to recognize the fallen soldiers and commemorate the end of it.
