Stewart Island is a one of the purest natural beauties of New Zealand. Hectares and hectares of untouched forrest, wildlife sanctuary for the only bird on earth that does not fly, the "Kiwi", beautiful beaches and friendly locals are just a few things to bring up of this beautiful place.
We are going to Stewart Island to do the Great Walk, it is a 3 day walk through the forrest. The trip starts in Bluff, the southernmost town in the South Island of New Zealand. We boarded the catamaran at 11:30am and it was a smooth sailing for about an hour to cross the Foveaux. The ferry goes at a speed of about 20 to 24 knots.
We docked in Oman, a small town in Stewart Island. After buying a few things in the only Four Square in town and spending some time at the DOC I-Site, we started walking towards Maori Beach. A few meters into our walk, I noticed there was a local with a bin full of freshly caught crayfish so I stuck my head to look at them; however when I walked away he called me and asked me if I wanted one... of course I said yes and I scored a great crayfish for dinner!
After several hours walking we arrived at Maori Beach, a long gold sand beach. We set up our camp and went to the hut at 7:00pm for a talk with Bob, the DOC ranger. He told us, among many things, that we could see and hear Kiwis in our beach. We went to bed early with the expectation of seeing them in the morning. The alarm was set for 4:00am, however shortly before that we were woke up by the loud screeching of male and female Kiwis. We got out of the tent and started looking for them. We walked around an went to the huts but were not successful. Once we got back to our campground we heard them again and we could see one of them running around. With a full moon we had enough light to see it without disturbing it with torches. It was fascinating seeing such a big bird running around even for a few seconds.
