Our backpacking trip: Febrero 22 / February 22

Hoy es un dia muy especial… vamos a caretiar y bucear en la Gran Barrera de Coral. Nos embarcamos en Ocean Freedom a las 7:30am con 70 pasajeron y 13 tripulantes hacia la barrera de coral. Un poco despues de una hora llegamos al arrecife Upolu, uno de loslugares donde este bote puede ir ya que todos los permisos que expide el gobierno son para areas especificas.

Me habian seleccionado para ir en el primer grupo de buceo, asi que al poco tiempo que anclamos en el arrecife Upolu me dieron toda la indumentaria y cuando menos pense estaba en el agua viendo semejante maravilla de la naturaleza. Los diferentes clases de coral y peces y sus colores hacen de este lugar una cosa increible. Desafortunadamente fue una buceada corta porque solo pueden llevar a aprendices por 20 minutos, asi que se fueron en un abrir y cerrar de ojos.

Marcela salio a bucear a eso de las 11:00am. Ya que ella es certificada pudo bucear for 40 minutos… pero tuvieron suficiente aire par air por 48 minutos! Para Marcela fue un sueño hecho realidad porque llevaba hablando de bucear en la Gran Barrera de Coral por mucho tiempo.

Mientras Marcela estaba buceando estuvo lloviendo bastante y yo fui el unico que me aventure a caretiar bajo la lluvia y la madre naturaleza me recompenzo ese esfuerzo… Primero vi un tiburon pequeño, esta clase de tiburones es muy graciosa porque pueden caminar en el fondo del oceano, es muy divertido verlos caminar. Despues de ver el tiburon me encontre una tortuga verde y estuve nadando con ella por unos 7 minutos. Parecia que fuera mi guia personal en el arrecife, me llevo por todas partes… fue muy especial compartir este lugar tan especial con una criatura tan hermosa!

Despues del almuerzo nos fuimos para otro lugar. Nos metimos a caretiar con una de las de la tripulacion que iba a hacer un tour guiado de careteo. Fue bastante informativo porque iba explicando lo que veiamos. Lo mejor que vimos fue una raya de puntos azules y un par de pulpos. Los pulpos se quedaron en el mismo lugar por un rato asi que tuvimos una buena oportunidad de ver lo que hacian.

A las 4:30pm regresamos a Cairns despues de haber tenido la gran oportunidad de disfrutar de este paraiso! Estoy seguro que lo recordaremos por mucho tiempo… o terminamos volviendo, quien sabe.

Today is a very special day… we will be snorkeling and diving in the Great Barrier Reef. We embarked at 7:30am in Ocean Freedom with 70 people and 13 crew destined for the outer reef. After just over an hour we arrived to Upolu Reef, one of the reef spots this boat can use as permits issued by the governmet are area specific.

I had been selected to be in the first group of divers, so shortly after the boat anchored at Upolu Reef, we were given all the gear and just before I knew it I was in the water witnessing one of the Natural Wonders of the World. The different kinds of coral and fish and their colours make the Great Barrier Reef a magnificent place. Unfortunately it was a short dive as they can only take intro divers for 20 minutes, so it was like a blink of an eye.

Marcela went for her dive at 11:00am. Since she is a certified diver she could go for 40 minutes… but actually they had enough air for 48 minutes! It was a dream come true for her as she has been wanting to dive in the Great Barrier Reef for quite some time.

While Marcela was diving there was a lot of rain so I was the only one in the water snorkeling and I got rewarded by mother nature… First, I got to see a small reef shark, they are quite funny because they can walk on the bottom of the ocean, it is entertaining to see them doing it. After that experience I found a green turtle and swam with her for around 7 minutes. It was like she was my personal snorkeling guide and wanted to show me several places of the reef… it was very special to share this space with such a beautiful creature!

After lunch we went to a second location. We jumped on the water with one of the boat crew members that was going to do a guided snorkeling tour. It was very informative as she was explaining most of the different things we were seeing. The most exciting creatures we saw were a blue dotted stingray and a couple of octopuses. The octopuses hanged around for quite some time so we had the chance to observe them and see what they were doing.

We came back to Cairns at 4:30pm after experiencing such beautiful place! I am sure we will remember it for a long time… or will end up coming back, who knows.
