Febrero 13 - 16 / February 13 - 16

February 13 was a driving day; we left Airlie Beach in the morning and drove to Townsville.  It was a very hot day so we took it easy.  When we arrived in Townsville we went to Castle Hill for sunset and headed back to the campground.

The evening was quite exciting… there was a drunk guy in the campground screaming and throwing things around so the camp manager upgraded us to a motel room with AC and private bathroom… we scored really good that night!

On February 14 we took the ferry to Magnetic Island in the morning and headed to XBase Hostel, a very nice hostel by the beach.  We got our room at 2:00pm and could not believe what we got… a room just by the beach, literally on top of the ocean.  When we booked it they showed us a brochure of the hostel and told us that we were getting one of the 2 rooms by the beach, but you know how travel agencies lie to your face all the time; however this time was true!

We then had lunch and took the bus to Geoffrey Bay to see the rock wallabies.  It was nice to see mom wallabies with joeys.  Take a look at the pictures and video.  The evening brought a big thunderstorm… around 4:00am the lightning was very strong that I decided to record a short video… take a look!

In the morning of February 15 we took the bus to The Forts, a 4Km return walk to a World War II site.  This site was built to help spotting enemy ships during the war.  They also had some guns at the top of the mountain but were only fired once during the war towards a US ship that did not identify properly (friendly fire).  During the walk we saw a couple of koalas… they were introduced to the island many years ago due to the dangers in the mainland.  They brought 18 koalas then and the population has increased.  We even saw a baby koala that probably left his mom not long ago!

We then went to Horseshoe Bay and had a beer in a local bar and walk along the beach.  Later, we took the bus to Picnic Bay; we went for a 1.5Km return walk to a lookout for sunset… not much of a sunset because there is a big storm coming.  We then headed back to the hostel for dinner and beers.

Unfortunately good things come to an end and we have to leave Magnetic Island.  We were going to spend the day at the hostel enjoying the pool but it was raining and there was a storm coming so we decided to head back.  In the morning of February 16 we took the ferry back to Townsville.  We spent the rest of the day at the Reef HQ Aquarium; a beautiful aquarium in the heart of Townsville dedicated to the Great Barrier Reef and all its habitants.
